Today, superheroes are everywhere, thanks in no small part to film adaptations.
If you’re a fan, or just want to get back to the source, here’s a selection of the best comics of the moment, including the Fantastic 4. “A Solution for Everything” (Marvel Deluxe) by Jonathan Hickman, Dale Eaglesham and Neil Edwards brings together several original sagas with exceptional guest stars, such as Galactus, the Silver Surfer, Fattlis and Spider-Man.
If you’re an Iron Man fan, “Extremis” is a must-have. This adventure, dating from 2005 and 2006, is a thrilling technological thriller, rich in action and twists.
Writer Warren Ellis forces Tony Stark to confront an American terrorist who has injected himself with a new super-soldier serum. Drawing artist Adi Granov has produced some impressive plates, which have subsequently influenced the Iron Man films.
In parallel, Daredevil is the star of “Dark Nights” (100% Marvel), 3 stories that reveal several facets of the blind superhero’s personality, created in the 60’s.
The first adventure, by Lee Weeks, forces him to battle the snow and the mafia in an attempt to save a little girl in need of a transplant. The second, by David Lapham, sees DD battling the Shocker and a foot-high man. Last but not least, guest star Misty Knight. A great success for a character who is currently celebrating her 50th birthday. Don’t miss “Dardevil Volume 1” by Frank Miler (Marvel Icons). An indispensable classic featuring Elektra and the Kingpin.
What’s more, as the year draws to a close, several events are shaking up the world of comic books:
. if you like pure, unadulterated action, “Who is the Red Hulk?” (Marvel Deluxe) is for you. Ed McGuiness, Jeph Loeb, Art Adams and Frank Cho masterfully orchestrate the arrival of this new character (even if the question remains unanswered).
. At DC, Year Zero (DC Renaissance) offers the Snyder-Capullo duo’s personal vision of Batman’s origins. Fasten your seatbelts! (Urban Comics)
. Will the Justice League (Superman, Batman…) disappear? Who are its mysterious enemies? Are Pandora and her box guilty? What role will Lex Luthor play? Action, suspense, betrayal, love…all in volumes 4, 5 and 6 (DC Renaissance). Superman fans won’t want to miss the parallel magazine “Superman Saga”.
. the conclusion of the Vertigo saga “Y, the Last Man” by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra (Urban Comics). Is there only one man left on Earth? All the answers are in this 5th and final volume of over 300 pages. Sensitive readers please refrain!
Delcourt’s Ghostbusters are back in comic book form. How can you resist the return of the ghostbusters?
Last but not least, Lucky Luke, the most American of Franco-Belgian comic book heroes, invites you to discover the Tontons Dalton (Dargaud). The famous outlaw brothers become godparents to Junior, the son of their cousin Emmet. A memorable adventure, in homage to the film “Les Tontons Flingueurs”, thanks to the talents of Achdé, Laurent Gerra and Jacques Pessis (universal legatee of humorist Pierre Dac).
And on the DVD front:
. “X-Men Days of Future Past” (Fox), directed by Bryan Singer, is a must-see (photo). This time, the script is based on the saga created by John Byrne, and the tone is dark, very dark, even oppressive at times. In the future, mutants are hunted down by Sentinels, government robots. The world resembles a vision of totalitarian apocalypse. To change the course of history, Wolverine travels back to the 70’s with the help of Bishop…A very ambitious film, well mastered on every level: direction, script, casting. It is regrettable, however, that the character of Bishop (absent from the original comic-book) is not introduced to the viewer (he actually appears much later in the Marvel universe).
. Don’t miss “Edge of Tomorrow”, directed by Doug Liman. Tom Cruise is particularly convincing in his role as Director of Communications for Earth’s armed forces, forced to confront aliens despite having no experience of war. What’s more, he relives his first and last battle indefinitely! A real success, with an unforgettable fight scene in the Louvre (Warner Home Vidéo).
. “Brooklyn 99” is the craziest US series of the moment, starring New York cops including “Expendable” Terry Crews! (Universal)
. the ninth and final season of “How I Met Your Mother”. Indispensable for discovering who Ted’s wife is, Barney’s destiny (a huge Star Wars fan) and an alternative ending (20th Century Fox).
. finally, if you’re looking for optimum sound and image processing, Pioneer has a new range, including the BDP-LX88-K/S model with, among other things, an ultra-quiet rigidized playback unit.
