Louis Vuitton – The House of trunks and travel

Louis Vuitton founded his company in Paris in 1854, specializing in the manufacture of flat-bottomed travel trunks – a technical innovation that enabled stacking, impossible with the domed trunks of the time. The LV monogram was created in 1896 by Georges Vuitton to combat counterfeiting. Today the bridgehead of the LVMH group, Louis Vuitton is the world’s highest-selling luxury brand – estimated to exceed 20 billion euros by 2023.

From trunk to bag: the Louis Vuitton story

The Trianon trunk of 1858 – gray waterproof canvas, flat bottom, safety clasps – laid the technical foundations for the House. The Damier was introduced in 1888, and the Monogram in 1896. The Speedy, derived from the Keepall created in 1930, became one of the world’s best-selling bags in 1959. Nicolas Ghesquière has headed women’s fashion since 2013, Pharrell Williams men’s fashion since 2023.
