BOEUF SUR LE TOIT SINCE 1922
Since its creation in 1922, the history of Le Bœuf sur le Toit has been intimately linked to a group of artists, musicians, poets and painters who gathered every week around Jean Cocteau – the owner of the premises. Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Francis Picabia, Picasso, Erik
Satie, later Charles Trenet or Léo Ferré; these evenings gave rise to impromptu concerts and artistic performances – so much so that the expression “faire un bœuf” was born within these walls.
THE PARIS OF THE ANNÉES FOLLES
A joyful, epicurean and inspired outfit: the new face of Le Bœuf sur le Toit, with its interiors redesigned by Alexis Mabille, a multi-disciplinary designer of his time, remains faithful to its original score and places artists at the heart of the house. A Music Hall awaits them every evening, with a program sponsored by some of the greatest names in the business. But before the show, the table! In collaboration with chef Jean-Pierre Vigato, Le Bœuf sur le Toit revives the great classics of the Parisian brasserie.
DECORATION BY ALEXIS MABILLE
True to the spirit of Le Bœuf sur le Toit, Alexis Mabille has chosen a singular decor inspired by the restaurant’s most glorious years – the 30s and 40s. A sort of twist on Art Deco, to bring it into our own time.
“Visiting the premises, I felt the vibrations that made Le Bœuf sur le Toit what it was; and the project I’ve created is here to restore and revive this mythical address of early 20th-century Paris to its splendor, which charmed Cocteau, Picabia, Dior, Coco Chanel, Dufy and so many others, including the chansonniers of the era from which the expression *faire un bœuf* comes.” Alexis Mabille
MATERIALS, LINES AND TEXTURES
The restaurant’s graphic lines and play of mirrors combine the warmth of inlaid wood with gold-leaf bronzes. Alexis Mabille has carefully chosen bold textiles produced exclusively for the premises; references to Jean-Michel Frank, Joseph Hoffman, René Prou and Royère punctuate the softly lit reception areas. The terracotta ox head with lyre horns created by Jean Marais for the site will be on display. Le Bœuf sur le Toit is an evolving venue where you can spend the whole evening without leaving: from restaurant to bar, to Music Hall, smoking room and private lounges.
PLACE TO LIVE
This is followed by the bar – a must – treated with the casualness of a lounge around low sofas and warmly tinted blond woodwork. The red marble furniture, like the large fresco on the ceiling, is inspired by one of the pillars of the place: Cocteau.
Our cocktail menu is the fruit of close collaboration with the iconic Maison Hennessy. Our signature recipes trace the 250-year history of the prestigious Cognac house.
The long-awaited Music Hall, with its central grand piano, is decked out in gold fountain sequins and carpets with constructivist floral motifs. As for the antique mirrored tables, they capture the reflections of the crystal sconces and transport us into a festive, timeless atmosphere.
A LEGENDARY PARISIAN BRASSERIE
In the kitchen, Le Bœuf sur le Toit honors the great classics of brasserie with a menu designed by chef Jean-Pierre Vigato. Warm field leeks with ravigotée vinaigrette, very large Burgundy snails, fine sole meunière or grilled, Canadian lobster with beurre blanc and saffron rice, coquelet with devil’s sauce, Charolais beef tartar or the traditional veal head casserole… Le Bœuf sur le Toit’s menu blends expertise and tradition, daring a few bold choices, and promises to breathe new life into the dishes that have made the restaurant’s reputation since it opened – among them l’écailler and its beautiful seasonal seafood.
MUSIC-HALL, A RICH AND VARIED PROGRAM
“Imagine a place to live like none other in Paris”. Benjamin Patou, the man behind this renaissance, asked one of France’s greatest artists, his friend Patrick Bruel, to join him in this ambitious project.
They have joined forces to restore the reputation of this key institution on the Parisian dining and entertainment scene. Since 1922, the Bœuf sur le Toit has played host to some of France’s and the world’s greatest artists, and now needs a program to match its heyday. They’ll be in charge of the artistic direction, with jazz, pop, stand-up, young talent showcases, groups and established singers: the festive atmosphere promises to be there!
