From Edmonde Charles-Roux to Emmanuelle Alt to Carine Roitfield, visionary women, each with their own approach to fashion, have marked a chapter in Vogue history. A magazine with a worldwide reputation, the job is a perilous balancing act. Over the years, new concessions have had to be made: to remain number 1 with the arrival of digital technology, to keep up with the flood of new magazines, to know how to please and shock, to be innovative while maintaining classic codes.
95 years: a longevity that testifies to its success. For the occasion, the magazine is offering four covers. 4 covers featuring 4 top models who weren’t chosen at random: Gisèle, Kate, Christy and Kendall.
Gisèle Bündchen.
The top of the tops, who retired from the catwalks this summer, has remained the world’s highest-paid model for nine years running. 44 million in 2015, according to Forbes. The Brazilian supermodel is not in decline, and her story is inspiring. A mother with a sculptural body, a business woman, her life is like a success story without a ripple. So it doesn’t matter what tabloid gossip tries to upset her. Once again, Vogue pays tribute to her. With the help of photographer friend Mario Testino, Vogue delivers an intimate cover. A cover that exudes joy. I’m as intoxicated by Gisèle’s naturalness as I was by her effortless charm.
Kate Moss
Eternal twig. A tumultuous life: her turpitudes with the underworld of rock’n’roll, her love of pop music, her grey slims, her collaborations with Longhamps, Topshop, legendary advertising campaigns…Kate Kate Kate. Vogue has always devoted beautiful pages to the British top, even during the “Kate cocaine” scandal. A scandal that was supposed to spell the end of her career. Instead, she’s back even stronger, invading the fashion world at every level. Her face is everywhere, her bangs are copied by all, and now she seems invincible. Yet her frail voice and detachment betray an elusive brokenness, which is what makes her so charming. Mute most of the time, she’s known for always having a drink in her hand. For Vogue, it’s a nod to her sultry image. Shot in leather boots-wine glass on the table. Casual look by Mert & Marcus.
Kendall Jenner
It’s impossible to escape the family, the Kardashian tribe. Ambient paranoia: we end up looking for a link with the clan in every item that makes the headlines! Kendall Jenner, daughter of Bruce – now Caitlyn – and Kris Jenner, makes her Forbes debut this year. Directly in 8th place, she reportedly capitalized $4 million in 2015. New muse for Estée Lauder, darling of Karl Lagerfeld, Kendall has managed to go from reality TV personality to model inductee. To celebrate, Vogue offers her a first cover. A first cover for the magazine’s 95th anniversary: Kendall signs a high-end arrival, shot by David Sims.
Christy Thurlington.
An authoritative name in the 90s. A member of the very select group of supermodels who were emblematic of the era, Christy did not fade with the advent of the 2000s. With high-profile contracts with the biggest cosmetics brands, at over 40 she remains an influential top, with whom Vogue Paris often collaborates (October 2008 cover that plays with her image, making her a “classic” in the fashion Bible). Inez and Vinoodh capture her, as radiant as ever, for this anniversary cover.
Vogue pulls out all the stops: a compilation of the magazine’s 140 most emblematic front covers can be found throughout the pages of Vogue Covers, specially edited by Ramsey. Available on newsstands from September 29. In the meantime, Vogue Paris promises to spoil us with a host of surprises on its social networks!
Happy birthday #Vogueparis95!
