From 11 to 15 November, during Paris Photo week, Cyril Manzini is showing four analogue series at Art Gallery Chapon. He makes the prints himself, in his own laboratory.
On Thursday 12 November, Paris Photo opens to the public beneath the glass roof of the Grand Palais, for a 29th edition marking the bicentenary of photography. That same evening, at 7 pm, on rue Chapon (Paris 3rd arrondissement), Cyril Manzini inaugurates L’Âme d’un autre temps, an exhibition with free admission until 15 November.
It brings together four series, all analogue: haute couture, Paris Opera dancers, travel, still lifes. The available images from the exhibition show a white dress whose movement blurs until only a silhouette remains, dancers in front of tall windows, a red coat against a dark blue background.
Manzini has worked in analogue photography since 2017 and makes his own prints. The detail matters. In analogue photography, printing is the stage where density, contrast and the depth of the blacks are fixed. Entrusting it to a laboratory means delegating those decisions; doing it oneself means keeping them. Here, from shooting to paper, the image stays in the same hands.
He cites Paolo Roversi, Sarah Moon and Deborah Turbeville, three names associated with atmospheric fashion photography. Whether his prints sustain that lineage, only the hanging will tell: the reproductions do not allow a conclusion.
The exhibition is presented by La Maison de l’argentique, which Manzini founded in 2020 to preserve and pass on analogue photography, and to bring attention to those who still practise it. The initiative is six years old; it extends his work more than it is distinct from it, and readers do well to know this. He is also preparing a first book.
“Returning to craftsmanship in a world that is dematerialising”: this is the phrase he chooses for the exhibition. Four series, five days: the argument rests on the continuity of a single hand, and it is on paper that it is judged.
