Oracle reports 130,000 active ChatGPT users. The agreement with OpenAI brings AI tools closer to a company’s procurement channels and permissions.
Adopting a tool also depends on the path needed to buy it and give it access to the right data. In their announcement of 27 October, OpenAI and Oracle bring these two dimensions closer together. Oracle’s US customers can buy the OpenAI API, Codex and ChatGPT Work through Oracle Marketplace.
Distinguishing usage from the project
The publication reports 130,000 active ChatGPT users and more than 95,000 Codex users at Oracle. It also describes Oracle AI Workspace, still under development, intended to bring Oracle applications and data together within ChatGPT. This prospect should not be confused with a general availability that has already been established.
The number of users indicates the reported spread of use. It does not say how much work has been validated, at what cost, or how often corrections were needed. The data come from the partners; they do not constitute an independent assessment of quality.
Permissions as a condition of use
In a house, a tool connected to procurement or commercial documentation might spare some searching between applications. But its value would depend on the precision of access rights. Viewing a contract, preparing an analysis and committing an expense fall under different authorisations.
The point to examine would therefore be the passage between systems: is the user’s identity preserved, do the restrictions follow it, and can the result be verified where the action took place? A simplified purchase reduces an administrative friction. It does not remove the need to answer these questions before entrusting a process to an agent.
