BETTER AND BETTER EQUIPPED, THE FRENCH NEED HELP
TO INSTALL AND USE THEIR CONNECTED OBJECTS
While the democratization of connected objects is underway, with an increase in purchase intentions for all types of objects, the French are not yet benefiting from the full potential of their equipment. The reason: installation is considered too complex and time-consuming. This is an obstacle to purchase for 79% of French people, who have already given up on buying a connected object deemed “too expensive” for the use they would make of it. And yet, 31% of them would be prepared to spend up to 500 euros on a new device. At a time when connected speakers and voice assistants are making their way into French homes, this represents a real challenge for industry players.
– 74% of French people believe that connected objects represent a real revolution
– 64% of French people (48% in 2016) say they don’t use all the functions of a connected object because they don’t know how to use it properly
– 45% of French people (38% in 2016) confide in consulting free content (Internet, specialized magazines…) or asking a loved one for help to install or better use a connected object
– 32% of French people describe the installation of connected objects as “complex” or even “irritating” (19%).
THE FRENCH HAVE ADOPTED CONNECTED OBJECTS
72% say they are useful and can make daily life easier, and 74% consider that connected objects have revolutionized their lives in the same way as the Internet or smartphones. This positive view of connected objects generates high expectations among the French: 29% expect their connected objects to save them time, 15% expect them to save energy, and 13% expect them to make their homes more secure. “We’re seeing a real improvement in the French people’s image of connected objects. More and more of them are equipping themselves, which tends to prove that they are increasingly aware of the benefits of this equipment. Connected alarms in particular are very appealing, with 34% of French people declaring that they intend to install one within the next 5 years. Other sectors are already more mature, such as smart TVs, which have already won over 25% of French households,” enthuses Gaële Wuilmet, Boulanger Customer Manager.
STILL CONCERNS TO BE ADDRESSED
Despite the enthusiasm of the French for connected objects, the perceived or experienced difficulties of installing and using their equipment still represent an obstacle. 54% of French people have already considered that they have spent too much time to succeed in setting up or using their connected device, and 39% have gone so far as to abandon their purchase for fear of not knowing how to install or use it properly.
CONNECTED OBJECTS FOR ALL BUDGETS
36% of French people say they don’t want to spend more than 100 euros on connected objects, while 31% are prepared to spend up to 500 euros. Older people (19% of those aged 65 and over) are more inclined than average to choose the vendor of the recalcitrant connected object. Connected watches and bracelets are the connected products that most appeal to the French (42% of the French intend to equip themselves in the next 5 years, up 15% on 2016). Smart TVs and connected alarms seem to be doing well, with 25% and 18% of French people respectively declaring that they are already equipped with them. 24% of non-equipped French people even say they intend to make a purchase within 5 years. This figure rises to 34% for connected alarms. Smartphones are the most popular way for French people to control their connected devices (57% cite them first or second).
