An emblematic appellation of Domaine Chanzy, Bouzeron delivers a particularly successful expression with Clos de la Fortune Monopole 2016, a nugget of the appellation and of aligoté.
Bouzeron is the paradise of the Aligoté grape. The 52-hectare Bouzeron appellation occupies both sides of the Dheune valley. In this northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise, the valley was carved out of the Middle and Upper Jurassic, and the soils are thin, composed of brown limestone and marl, and extend from 270 to 350 meters above sea level. Owned by Domaine Chanzy since 1974, when the company was founded, Clos de la Fortune is one of Burgundy’s finest Monopoles and certainly the finest terroir in Bouzeron. A true Grand Cru of the appellation, it is sometimes referred to as “the RomanéeVConti of Bouzeron”…
The only Monopole in the Village appellation, with a surface area of 3.75 hectares, Clos de la Fortune produces an elegant, feminine wine that will appeal to novices and connoisseurs alike, with a 2016 vintage full of finesse and precision. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, express all the subtlety of the terroir. Thanks to the excellent ripeness of the grapes, cold alcoholic fermentation followed by malolactic fermentation, the aromas of white flowers (lilac, hawthorn) have been preserved and express themselves right from the first nose. On the palate, Bouzeron Clos de la Fortune Monopole 2016 develops round, opulent, buttery notes before opening up with light citrus and fleshy white peach. A touch of refreshing salinity on the finish underlines the beautiful tension of this great wine. An excellent Bouzeron to accompany refined dishes, such as a fine veal chop au sautoir or pike-perch with beurre blanc. Unless you prefer a more rustic accompaniment, to which it will add elegance: a pan-fried wild mushroom or frogs’ legs in chicken sauce.
JEAN BAPTISTE JESSIAUME
YOUNG CREATOR OF INSPIRED WINES
The 6th generation of a line of renowned Burgundy winegrowers, Jean-Baptiste Jessiaume has put all his talent and passion for terroirs at the service of Chanzy. He has created a range of highly elegant wines.
Born “into wine” and raised among the vines of Santenay, the cradle of the Jessiaume family, Jean Baptiste has been learning the trade from his father Marc and his uncle Pascal Jessiaume since he was a teenager.
Vineyard management and winemaking already hold no secrets for him. Neither does the richness of Burgundy’s complex terroir, of which he has a fine analysis. Last but not least, his family’s involvement in the vineyards for several generations has enabled him to develop a solid network, guaranteeing supplies of highly sought-after grapes from the legendary Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits appellations.
