Distributed by Terroirs Distillers Artisanal Brands, Pōkeno is placing six single malts with French wine merchants. Its singularity lies, according to the distillery, in its woodwork.
Since 1 October, Pōkeno Whisky single malts have been available in France through a selection of wine merchants and online, distributed by Terroirs Distillers Artisanal Brands. The range comprises six expressions, from Pōkeno Origin to Totara Cask.
Founded by Matt and Celine Johns on the North Island, the distillery describes itself as family-run and independent, and says it controls its entire production on site, from distillation to bottling. It claims to be the only distillery in New Zealand with its own cooper. This claim comes from the distillery and has not been cross-checked.
The press kit describes a process that is quick to list: spring water from volcanic hills, barley grown in New Zealand, long fermentation, slow distillation. The announced profile is soft and fruity, marked by the subtropical climate of the North Island.
If one fact is to be retained, it is the cask. The references explore several types of cask, including native New Zealand woods such as tōtara, which inspires the Totara Cask expression. A distillery that makes its own casks can decide the maturation material itself, which would give this range its meaning. The range also includes a limited “Lord of the Rings” edition, whose link with the woodwork the press kit does not specify.
