On the wild Baja California Sur peninsula, where the Sonoran Desert drops straight into the Sea of Cortez, Aman is opening a sanctuary of eighteen casitas. Less a hotel than a calculated renunciation of everything that seaside luxury usually builds to be noticed.
Amanvari : the Sanskrit contraction of “peace” and “water” has the merit of candour. Aman does not claim to invent a new vocabulary of destination; it applies to a territory still largely spared by the hotel industry the grammar that has built its reputation since Phuket in 1988 — restraint as the supreme form of luxury. What stands out, reading the dossier supplied by the house, is not what has been built at Costa Palmas, but everything the house has refused to build there.
Eighteen casitas, not one more, in a community that could have accommodated ten times as many keys had real-estate yield been the only logic. The architecture firm Elastic Architects, initially supported by Heah & Co., chose to make the site itself the master plan: a path that starts at the entrance, crosses a central lagoon, and reaches the beach only after a slow dilation of space. Nothing is frontal. The sea is not given all at once from reception, as in so many resorts designed for photography; it is earned, sequence after sequence, in the manner of a Japanese garden that refuses to reveal its totality at first glance.
This choice has to be placed in the geography it inhabits. The Sierra de la Laguna closes off the horizon on one side, while the desert and the estuary answer each other on the other: Baja California Sur is not a destination domesticated by decades of mass tourism, as Cabo San Lucas, a few dozen kilometres to the south, may be. It is a land that still imposes its own conditions — aridity, harsh light, geological scale — rather than bending to those of the visitor. Building here “in limited series”, in Aman’s own words, as it backs the hotel with a handful of signature residences, amounts to betting that the future of very high-end luxury lies less in an escalation of amenities than in the ability to let a place remain itself.
