A few weeks ago, we made an appointment with one of Paris’s most iconic venues, the Mama Shelter.
The adventure of MAMA SHELTER began in 2008 with the opening of MAMA SHELTER PARIS. Its founders, the Trigano family (co-founders of Club Med), Cyril Aouizerate and Philippe Starck, asserted right from the start that they would install MAMAs wherever a singular history of the world was being written. Claiming the freedom to choose only by heart, they have therefore sought new locations, where they could express their ideal of an atypical, eccentric, participatory and unique place to live. 7 years on, the Mama spirit lives on: a quirky tone, an impertinence and, above all, a sense of family.
After Paris, it was in Marseille, Istanbul, Lyon and Bordeaux that they continued to write this unprecedented vision.
They chose cities capable of welcoming their dream of generous, overflowing hospitality. Cities that, while showcasing their rich heritage, are resolutely looking to the future. Cities where they can live their ideal of peaceful humanity.
It’s in the authentic Paris of the Saint Blaise district, with its flower-filled café terraces, gardens and rebellious atmosphere, that MAMA SHELTER welcomes you with overflowing generosity and simple, authentic conviviality. Between artists’ studios and “the countryside in Paris”, the cobbled streets are lined with the silhouettes of Edith Piaf, Barbara and Jim Morrison.
MAMA has set up shop along the petite-ceinture, the emblematic railway line of Old Paris, and just opposite “La Flèche d’Or”, the temple of the European pop-rock scene. Sensual and elegant, the 172 rooms, entirely decorated by Philippe Starck, are equipped with 27-inch iMacs, which offer free VOD, photobooth and videobooth, Internet, television, computer… and 5-star bedding.
The restaurant offers simple, home-cooked dishes designed by Alain Senderens and Jérôme Banctel, to share with friends around the tables d’hôtes. At the gigantic bar, in the pizzeria or on the terrace, you can meet American poets, Japanese painters or Latin American writers.
The rooftop in summer lets you let your gaze wander over the sea of Paris rooftops to the slow rhythm of the hammock’s rocking or to the sound of a game of ping-pong.
Whether it’s a game of giant table soccer, an impromptu photobooth or videobooth session, live music on the stage or simply a meal or cocktail, the MAMA SHELTER experience is something to be savored.
Our stopover at Mama Shelter Paris was an opportunity to try out its bar, recently taken over by Clément Faure.
Much more than just a place to eat and sleep, it’s an experience of new encounters and sharing that’s open to all. To be a refuge from the aggressions of the outside world, comfortable, warm and comforting, as much as benevolent, joyful and blissful – that’s what MAMA is all about.
