Skyscanner, one of the world’s leading travel comparison services, has carried out a survey on what the French miss most when they go on vacation abroad. For 19% of them, croissants, fresh bread and cheese top the list.
* Survey conducted online by One Poll in February 2014 among 1,000 French travelers, 1,000 Spanish travelers and 1,000 Italian travelers.
Far from pastries and baguettes
When on vacation abroad, the French regret two culinary habits above all else. Competing for first place with 19% of votes are croissants and fresh bread, and cheese. In third place, television programs are cited by 12% of French people. Time zone differences, lack of television and foreign programs don’t always allow holidaymakers to keep up with their favorite series and shows.
Cravings at any age
Depending on your age, you’ll feel different things when you go on vacation. On the other hand, no generation is immune to this feeling. Gastronomic differences are strongly felt by all generations, but some cope better than others. Younger people are the most affected by a lack of gastronomic landmarks: 28% of 18-24 year-olds cite the absence of bread, croissants and cheese as their primary lack. For 15% of 45-54 year-olds, the lack is felt in coffee. 10% of over-55s regret not having as much access to their country’s news during their vacations.
Coffee for the lady, sport for the gentleman
Some vacation habits can be hard to break. 11% of the women questioned would like to be able to enjoy a coffee on vacation similar to the one they usually drink. Everyday comfort is sometimes disrupted and, for example, for 10% of women surveyed, sleep can be disrupted by the absence of shutters or blinds in hotel rooms. While sleep habits can be disrupted during the vacations, this is not what bothers men the most. Around 10% regret access to news, and 4% particularly sports news. Fervent readers of L’Équipe, some find it difficult to give up their daily sports newspaper for a few days in favor of a vacation.
And our European neighbors?
Each country has its own specific characteristics, and shortages differ according to habits. For our Italian neighbors, the number one lack is coffee (28%), a true symbol of Italy. This is followed by the bidet, very popular among Italians (16%), and finally by not being able to sleep in one’s own bed, a real problem for 15% of Italians on vacation. Among our Spanish neighbors, 31% regret not being able to dine late in all countries during their vacations. The second most important factor for 15% of Italians is the sunny weather, which they don’t always find in other countries during the summer months.
Everywhere, an ideal function for exploring the world
To discover new daily pleasures during the vacations, holidaymakers can use the ‘Everywhere’ tool available on Skyscanner. This function enables even the most indecisive to find the ideal destination at the best price. Available on both the website and the mobile application, ‘Everywhere’ inspires travelers by suggesting destinations they may not have considered. All they have to do is enter their place of departure, and Skyscanner takes care of the rest, suggesting the cheapest destinations.
