Highland Park, Orkney’s iconic distillery, continues its legacy of innovation with the launch of its latest expression, Cask Strength No.4. Embodying the perfect fusion of tradition and taste exploration, this whisky is a true celebration of the skills of Gordon Motion, the company’s Master Distiller.
A Pioneering Legacy
True to the pioneering spirit of the first of the Grand Dames, Madame Clicquot, Highland Park continues to innovate in the world of spirits. The Cask Strength series, initiated in 2020, is a bold exploration of the aging capabilities of eaux-de-vie in different types of cask. No.4 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, offering unprecedented complexity and depth, thanks to a blend of casks that have contained sherry, bourbon and, for the first time, port.
Tasting of Cask Strength No.4
Highland Park Cask Strength No.4 is a sensory journey that begins with a deep rose-gold color, promising a rich, enveloping experience. On the nose, it offers complex aromas of toasted coconut, lemon and cedar wood, with a delicate touch of rosewater from the ex-porto casks.
On the palate, flavors of pink grapefruit and rosewater caress the palate, followed by intensely woody notes of toasted oak and heather honey, with a light peaty touch. The finish is long, revealing exotic spices and a hint of licorice, over floral peat smoke.
Tasting Advice
Gordon Motion recommends tasting this powerful whisky straight from the cask, but also suggests adding a little water to soften the intensity and reveal more subtle aromas. Enthusiasts can also experiment with different water ratios or one or two ice cubes to explore how this affects the whisky’s flavor profile.
A Commitment to Quality and Tradition
Bottled at 64.3% ABV and presented in a 70cl format, Cask Strength No.4 is available for €105. It can be purchased from a selection of wine merchants, offering connoisseurs the opportunity to own a masterpiece of their collection.
Highland Park is renowned not only for its exceptional whisky, but also for its commitment to the traditional production methods that have shaped its unique profile. Orkney’s heather-rich peat, sparsely wooded due to strong winds, contributes to the distinctive character of the distillery’s whiskies.
Highland Park Cask Strength No.4 is more than just a whisky; it’s a celebration of history, innovation and craftsmanship. Every sip is a tribute to the boldness and creativity that have made Highland Park a legend in the world of spirits.
