Comics Selection

Today, superheroes are everywhere, thanks in no small part to film adaptations. If you’re a fan, or just want to get back to the source, here’s a selection of the best current comics available in bookshops. Enjoy !

“Justice League: Interminable (Urban Comics – DC Rebirth). The first story is a successful mix of action, cosmic saga and industrial espionage. The second showcases the new Green Lantern duo, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. Finally, the team takes on a dark being named Shirak (!). Entertaining tales that highlight the complementary nature of the JL members. At the helm: star Bryan Hitch, the young and talented Shea Fontana, Tom DeFalco, Dan Abnett, Philippe Briones, Tom Derenick and the famous British artist Ian Churchill (don’t hesitate to visit his website), not forgetting the superb cover by Tony Daniel.
In parallel, DC continues to recount the family adventures of Superman, his son and his wife Lois. In volume 4, “Black Dawn” (Superman Rebirth), they discover that their neighbors are aliens guided by the evil Manchester Black. It’s a tough learning curve for young Jonathan Kent, especially with Batman and his son Damian keeping a close eye on him! Discovering Superman and Batman and their respective sons in the same comic-book is a historic event… Well done to DC for this daring scenaristic turn, orchestrated by Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason and Michael Moreci, not forgetting the superb covers by Jorge Jimenez.
In Volume 5, “Breaking Point”, the Kent family travels to the emblematic sites of American history in a mobile home. Scriptwriters Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason and illustrator Scott Godlewski celebrate family values and patriotism. Next, Superman takes on Deathstroke, a metahuman hitman who has targeted Lois Lane. An unexpectedly hard-hitting tale, orchestrated by the James Bonny-Tyler Kirkham-Arif Pinto trio.

On the Marvel side, “Daredevil: Justice” (volume 5 in the 100%Marvel collection) is both exciting and explosive. The pitch of the first story is particularly original: should superheroes now be able to testify in court? Matt Murdock, once again a religious man, is convinced of this and will do everything in his power to change the situation. A story by Charles Soule (responsible for the death and resurrection of Wolverine), Goran Sudzuka and Alec Morgan. Guest stars: Luke Cage and She-Hulk. By the way, if you’re a fan of Luke, a word of advice: (re)read his explosive adventures from 2002, written by Brian Azzarello and Richard Corben. As for Miss Hulk, if you’re not familiar with the John Byrne period, discover it as soon as possible: the action and humor were really there. Memorable!
Then DD heads off to China to save Blindspot, his former partner. Unfortunately, an unpleasant surprise awaits him…An action-packed, if far-fetched, storyline, illustrated by a Ron Garney in top form.
Note: Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, has become Mayor of New York!…all the details are in “Daredevil Legacy” 1…For the record, on the DC side, Lex Luthor was once President of the United States!

At the same time, “Spider-Man – Mysterioso” (Marvel Deluxe) will delight die-hard fans of the Web Weaver (photo). Mysterioso, the Vulture, Silvermane, the Rhino, the Scorpion and the rest of New York’s super-villains now give Spider-Man no respite. Each defeated adversary leaves room for another, ready to strike at Peter Parker and his loved ones. Throughout his career, the indefatigable vigilante has always managed to defeat them all. But when their motivations or identities change, these criminals become harder to defeat and, above all, ever more dangerous. If you like old-school action, you’ll have a great time…by Waid, Slott, Kelly, Azaceta, Martin and Fiumara.

Note: in these comics, Spider-Man and Superman don’t want to kill their opponents. So they’re very careful not to use their powers to the full. An excellent decision on the part of the writers…

And if you’re an X-Men fan, you’ll love “The Song of the Phoenix” (Marvel Deluxe). Jean Grey is dead, but the Phoenix is still alive. When the cosmic entity heads for Westchester, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men band together to prevent the destruction of all humanity. But when the Phoenix resurrects Jean to incarnate in her, the X-Men find themselves torn between their duty to fight this threat, and their attachment to the woman who was once one of them. A blockbuster saga created by Pak, Land and Kirkham between 2005 and 2007.

Finally, don’t miss “Un Cow-Boy à Paris”, the new Lucky Luke adventure (Lucky Comics), by Jul and Achdé, based on the universe of Morris, a great fan of comics. French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi makes a spectacular tour of the United States to raise funds to complete the future Statue of Liberty. But several incidents target the statue and even Bartholdi directly. Lucky Luke is assigned to escort the Frenchman all the way to Paris. It’s a culture shock for the cowboy who, not content with crossing the Atlantic for the first time, discovers the splendor of the City of Light, and the way of life of its natives, the Parisians… A highly original and successful new album that will delight fans of adventure and daring humor. Already a collector’s item!

On DVD, the first three films in the “Rambo” saga are back on 3 Blu-Ray and 3 4K UHD Blu-Ray, a real event with 10 hours of extras (Studio Canal). Exceptional action films with Stallone (a great comic book fan) at his best.
For the record, the actor is currently shooting Rambo 5.

Finally, the end of the year is marked by the death of Stan Lee, creator of most of Marvel’s superheroes. For the record, he also worked for DC. He recreated DC’s greatest superheroes as part of the “Just Imagine” collection, working with top artists such as John Byrne and Jim Lee. These highly original comics were published in France by Semic between 2002 and 2003.
