Invented in 1928, the Atmos’s quasi-perpetual movement counts down the hours, day after day, year after year, without batteries or winding – it’s a clock that literally lives on the air of time. Its secret lies in the hermetically sealed capsule at the back of the mechanism, capable of transforming variations in ambient temperature into mechanical energy.
A temperature fluctuation of just one degree is enough to give the mechanism a running time of 48 hours. Only the extremely slow oscillation speed of the balance and its suspension on an incredibly fine Elinvar* wire enable the mechanism to operate through the centuries without external intervention.
Extraordinarily classic, the rose gold cabinet of the new Atmos is sober and pure. This is the third version of the Atmos clock, which is also available with a yellow gold or rhodium-plated cabinet.
The incredible technical prowess embodied by the Atmos has been part of the watchmaking world for almost 80 years now. The months are indicated on an open-worked disc in the center of the dial, while another dial showing hours and minutes also displays the most accurate moon phase in the history of watchmaking, since it will be only one day off in 3821 years.
The balance moves with majestic slowness, describing only two alternations per minute. Suspended on a wire of elinvar, an alloy chosen for its high resistance to deformation under the usual thermal conditions, it ensures the precision of the movement, which is meticulously adjusted over many weeks by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s specialized watchmakers.
They have a great responsibility. They are fully aware that they are guiding the first steps of a mechanism whose longevity cannot be measured in human terms.
The fascinating spectacle of the workings of a mechanism whose evolutions embody the finest approach to perpetual motion is on full display. The new cabinet, mounted on a rose-gold base, is absolutely pure. The mystery now lies in the determination to conceal nothing.
In all its essential beauty, the clock suits any interior. Embodying time in its essence and duration, it is ready to measure the centuries, mark exceptional occasions and celebrate the events that mark our lives. To reveal the fabric of time.
Virtually perpetual, the Atmos clock travels through time, from generation to generation, marking a multitude of special moments. It was this vocation as messenger and witness to the passing of time that gave rise to the idea of offering personalized engraving of the Atmos clock. Its glass cabinet can be silk-screened, enabling meticulous work to be carried out on sophisticated lettering and motifs. A plaque can also be affixed to the base.
Driven by a unique spirit of invention, Jaeger-LeCoultre perpetuates the tradition of grand complications through a succession of extraordinary creations and legendary watches such as the Reverso, the 101 watch, the Geophysic, the Memovox, the Master Control, the Gyrotourbillon and the Atmos clock. With a vast heritage of 1249 mechanical calibres and almost 413 registered patents, Jaeger-LeCoultre remains the benchmark for Haute Horlogerie.
