We have dozens of mythical places in Paris, if you already know the Café des Deux Magots let yourself be charmed again, for the novices let yourself be bewitched. The setting is of a comforting classic, we know this place is an air of déjà vu, already crossed at the bend of a book, a photograph of the district Saint Germain. This café is mythical, and that’s just an understatement. Let’s start with its history, the two magots is a reference to the two statuettes of Chinese that make the soul of the place. Les Deux Magots was, at the beginning of its existence, a novelty and fabric store that was one of the first window stores in Haussmann’s Paris. The address and the name have been preserved to make these walls a fashionable café where French intellectuals liked to meet. Verlaine, Rimbaud, the surrealists like André Breton or the lovers JP Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir made the reputation of this place or maybe the place participated in the success of these artists. Les deux Magots is an inspiring, gentle café where the walls want to talk, to tell us the anecdotes of our great names… If only the walls could do it.
A cold February evening, a night walk in the Saint Germain des Prés district on the arm of a Parisian, a glass of muscadet, the welcome of the waiter, the scent of pastries and coffee make you love these seconds, this place. It only remains for me to recite the few verses of Verlaine…
“In the calm moonlight sad and beautiful, Which makes the birds dream in the trees, And sob with ecstasy the water jets. The great slender spouts of water among the marbles.”
“Clair de lune “, Fêtes Galantes Paul Verlaine
