Issey Miyake has a very unique way of looking at the world: not by embellishing it, but by attempting to capture its most fundamental phenomena. Water, salt, air, movement. With Lumière d’Issey, the brand continues this sensitive approach by tackling a material that is almost impossible to contain: light.
A new eau de parfum by Issey Miyake, Lumière d’Issey is an ode to optimism, to the invisible energy that flows through things and beings, and to that first light of morning that transforms our perception of a landscape. The fragrance does not seek to evoke a spectacular or artificial light, but rather that of dawn: gentle, gradual, and full of promise.
The idea might seem abstract. Yet it finds a very concrete expression in the composition created by perfumers Fabrice Pellegrin and Marie Salamagne. Both approached light as a raw material, almost like a ray of light being sculpted. “We wanted to translate the essence of light into a new medium,” explains Fabrice Pellegrin. Marie Salamagne, for her part, describes “a sensation that is both vivid and embracing, flowing through every facet of the composition like a unifying thread.” A bright light, then, but never cold; enveloping, yet never heavy.
The opening is built on the juicy brightness of 100% natural green mandarin, enlivened by the effervescent purity of neroli. The duo immediately evokes a sunny, almost Mediterranean freshness. Fabrice Pellegrin speaks of a smile from the very first note: “The aim was to evoke a smile right from the first hint.” This sensation of clarity carries through to the heart with a halo accord of orange blossom—also 100% natural—combined with a freesia accord and white musk. The freesia brings a breath of fresh air and a floral vibrancy; the musk adds a velvety, almost tactile texture.
The base notes, meanwhile, shift the fragrance toward a more distinctive modernity. A pistachio wood accord brings a sunny quality, before blending with the creamy roundness of sandalwood. The result is a luminous floral-amber trail that is at once feminine, soothing, and contemporary. Nothing overly sweet, nothing ostentatious: rather, a clear warmth, crafted with transparency.
This quest for light extends to the bottle, designed by MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO. It is undoubtedly one of the most striking elements of this launch. The silhouette, built around a play of triangular facets, captures and diffracts light like a kinetic prism. The transparent glass reveals a delicate, sun-kissed pink fragrance, evoking the softness of morning. The triangle—a motif dear to Issey Miyake’s design aesthetic—becomes here structure, surface, and vibration.
The bottle does more than simply house the fragrance—it embodies its very essence. It transforms light into an object, giving it an almost architectural quality. This geometric precision, so true to the Miyake spirit, avoids the pitfall of mere decoration. Poetry arises from precision. Even the packaging plays with this idea of diffraction, featuring silver triangles scattered across a white background, as if the bottle continued to radiate beyond itself.
Lumière d’Issey is also part of a more conscious approach to perfumery. Its formula, made in France, is certified vegan and composed of 90% naturally derived ingredients. The green mandarin is 100% natural, organic, and responsibly sourced from Italy; sandalwood, also 100% natural, comes from sustainably managed forests in Australia. The musk is derived from an upcycled molecule sourced from the paper industry, while the alcohol used is 100% natural and exclusively of French origin.
The bottle contains 15% recycled glass, and the 30 ml, 50 ml, and 100 ml sizes are refillable. According to the impact analysis provided, using a 50-ml bottle and a 150-ml refill, rather than four 50-ml bottles, would reduce CO₂ equivalent emissions by 66% and the use of fossil-based mineral resources by 67%. In a market where eco-design is sometimes reduced to a superficial selling point, Issey Miyake has opted here for precise, quantified transparency that is fully integrated into the overall project.
The campaign, directed by Marcus Tomlinson, extends this dramatic portrayal of dawn. The British director and photographer, who has previously collaborated on *Le Sel d’Issey*, has created a film in which the darkness slowly dissipates, pierced by beams of light. The bottle appears as if it were containing that first light, before projecting it through its geometric facets. Set to the ethereal music of “Arise” by Clann, the image becomes a sensory experience: everything seems suspended, fluid, and silently alive.
Lumière d’Issey is also available as a complete ritual, featuring a moisturizing shower cream and a moisturizing body lotion designed to prolong its luminous trail. It’s a way to incorporate the fragrance not only into the act of applying perfume, but also into a more intimate, almost morning-like routine.
With this creation, Issey Miyake Parfums opens a new chapter in design and emotion. True to its minimalist aesthetic, the house never forces wonder. Instead, it weaves it into the material, into the light, into the precision of an angle, into the breath of a white flower. Lumière d’Issey does not promise a spectacular transformation. It offers something even rarer: a clearer way to step into the day.
