There is a certain conceptual boldness in creating a fragrance centered on a place where, by definition, the sun never shines. Yet this is precisely the challenge taken on by Abyssae L’Extrait, the latest creation from L’Artisan Parfumeur, which envisions a sunken garden—shaped not by light but by time—and captures its most concentrated essence in an extract crafted by perfumer Daphné Bugey.
The fragrance opens with eucalyptus resin, whose usual freshness feels denser here—almost mineral—before incense unveils its smoky nuances. A rose then emerges in an unexpected light—balmy and sensual rather than fresh and floral—a sign that the fragrance seeks not so much to adhere to the classic codes of its raw materials as to reinterpret them through the lens of its immersive concept.
Cypriol then adds its dark, earthy texture, while sandalwoods envelop the whole in a creamy softness, and ambergris rounds out the composition with a subtle radiance, like a final ray of light managing to pierce the twilight. This layered structure, in which each ingredient extends and transforms the one before it rather than simply superimposing itself upon it, is in keeping with the compositional approach the house has been developing since its founding in 1976, one of the very first to champion the idea of narrative niche perfumery, built around concepts rather than mere accords.
