Torabhaig, the Isle of Skye’s newest distillery, reveals Torabhaig Legacy Series 2017
This is undoubtedly one of the most eagerly awaited launches in the Single Malt world.
Torabhaig (pronounced “Toravèg”), the Isle of Skye’s second-largest distillery, finally reveals its very first peated Single Malt. Named Torabhaig Legacy Series 2017, from a batch distilled in early 2017 and bottled at 46% vol., the inaugural cuvée is limited to just 3,600 bottles for the French market. A historic moment for the Isle of Skye, which sees the birth for the first time in 190 years of the second official distillery ever erected on the island. A second reference, Allt Gleann, will be unveiled in summer 2021.
Torabhaig Legacy Series 2017 will be available from February 19, 2021 in wine shops.

There had been no new whisky on Skye for 190 years
For Neil Mathieson, Managing Director of Torabhaig’s parent company, Mossburn Distillers, this first launch is very moving, as it marks the culmination of several years of preparation: the restoration of the buildings, then the start-up of the stills in 2017, the testing, the boldness of a new vision: “Torabhaig is the first distillery to have been built on the island for 190 years – that’s how much pressure we had on our shoulders. So we couldn’t simply develop yet another Scotch whisky: the idea was to create something new and unique, and to bring our own interpretation of the island’s culture and climate to the table. When you taste it, you get what I call “well-tempered peat”, a balance between finesse and character. It’s our trademark!
Pierre de Marignan, Marussia France Sales Director, is delighted with this new offering for enthusiasts: “As producer-distributors, the arrival of Torabhaig at Marussia France marks an important step for us. There will be a before and an after for Torabhaig in our product offering. This new Single Malt from the Isle of Skye is historic for the whisky world, and strengthens our offer for our passionate customers who love fine products.”
A single malt sculpted by the Isle of Skye
Torabhaig Legacy Series 2017 Limited Edition (3,600 bottles in France)
Alcohol content : 46% vol Capacity : 70 cl
Prix de vente constaté : 59 € Distilled in small copper pot stills, the first batch 2017 Legacy Series brings together a small hundred casks. Torabhaig produces a peaty distillate, one of the most phenolic in Scotland. A thousand nuances are revealed, shaped by brewing, fermentation, distillation and multiple small details, until the perfect balance between finesse and character is found. Peaty notes, so powerful and easily identifiable, conceal treasures of complexity if you take the trouble to work them delicately.
Style: peaty, complex, elegant.
Tasting notes: Bold and refined, Torabhaig Legacy Series 2017 brings out the sea spray on an intensely peaty profile, with all the subtleties of smoke intertwined. No doubt, it’s the Isle of Skye as much as the men who have sculpted this unique single malt with the same passion.
Torabhaig, Skye’s new distillery In 2017, when it lit up its stills in an old farmhouse on the south-eastern tip of Skye, on the Sleat Peninsula, one of the mythical cradles of Scotch, Torabhaig distillery set out to pick up the torch of a very old history. Five years later, in February 2021, Torabhaig finally unveiled its inaugural cuvee: 2017 The Legacy Series. When Mossburn Distillers – Torabhaig’s parent company – chose this mythical island as the setting for its latest creation, it first looked for the perfect site: the village of Teangue on the Sound of Sleat, the strait that separates the south-east coast from the Scottish mainland. Could anyone have imagined a more incredible challenge than to bring into being in the 21st century the second official distillery ever built on the Isle of Skye? For four years, passionate craftsmen worked to restore the historic building, whose magnificent stone came from the ruins of nearby Camus Castle (Caisteal Chamuis in Gaelic). In January 2017, the distillery finally came to life. With a pagoda roof that can be removed to accommodate some of the equipment, it houses at its heart a mash tun capable of brewing 1.5 t of malt, 8 Douglas fir fermentation vats where powdered yeast activates the mash for around 72 hours, and a pair of copper pot stills named Sir Iain and Lady Noble after the couple who once owned the land and farm. Torabhaig whisky is matured in oak casks, mostly old bourbon barrels, to preserve its great subtlety, and occasionally in sherry hogsheads, French virgin oak barrels.
