Attention tennis fans: the Sony Ericsson Open has just kicked off in sunny Miami. For the duration of the competition (March 21-April 3), Sony Ericsson is making this major tournament the first sporting event to be fully integrated on foursquare! It’s a new kind of partnership, offering “little yellow ball addicts” the chance to find out all about their favorite players.
From “Tennis fan” to “Mayor” of the Sony Ericsson Open…
For the 300,000 fans who attend the famous Sony Ericsson Open every year, the principle is simple: collect as many “Xperia Tennis Badges” as possible by “checking” from their smartphone their presence on each Sony Ericsson Open course and at given venues.
After becoming a “Tennis Fan”, the most assiduous will then have the chance to become a “Mayor”. For “Tennis Fans”: not only a discount on tickets to prestigious matches, but also the chance to win entry to post-match press conferences, see the players and get signed autographs. For the “Mayors”, a chance to win the 1st prize: the opportunity to draw matches and decide which duels will take place. Finally, for all Internet users: exclusive information and match results in real time.
“This partnership with foursquare™ is an innovative move that rewards tennis fans for their loyalty and creates a unique link between them and their favorite tennis stars, all through their smartphone. We are convinced that this type of partnership makes a major contribution to the success of the Sony Ericsson Open. In the same vein, and as we’re also doing with the Xperia Hot Shots on YouTube, we’ll continue to find ways of improving the approach to tennis for fans of the sport. Our aim is to take entertainment to the next level,” emphasizes Stephan Croix, Sony Ericsson’s Senior Vice President, International Marketing Partnerships.
The Xperia™ Hot Shots, a brand new kind of web reality show
From an early age, they’ve been hooked on the little yellow ball. Today, they dream of reaching the top of the podium.
6 young WTA players, all clay enthusiasts, will show us behind the scenes of their passion and daily lives, live, for Season 1 of Xperia™ Hot Shots on YouTube™.
From now on, follow the daily lives of Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet, as well as American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Slovak Dominika Cibulkova, British Heather Watson, German Sabine Lisicki and Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
Filming their adventures themselves with their Sony Ericsson Xperia™ smartphones, they then post them directly to the YouTube™ Xperia Hot Shots channel and dedicated Facebook page. They will then try to mobilize as many fans as possible to become a modern sports icon. At stake: a sponsorship contract with Sony Ericsson.
