ChatGPT’s Sponsored Agents put brand voices to the test

OpenAI is testing advertiser-funded conversations in the United States after an ad click. For luxury, the format raises questions of representation as much as distribution.

After an advertisement, users can choose to enter a conversation with an agent funded by the advertiser. OpenAI is testing this format, called Sponsored Agents, with a selection of advertisers in the United States. Its 16 September announcement says the exchange is identified as commercial and kept separate from the original conversation.

An advertisement that answers back
The change lies in the ability to ask questions. A fixed advertising message presents a few arguments; an agent has to shape a response to a particular situation. For a Maison, consistency in this voice concerns product features, the limits of its promises and the tone it uses.

The provider also presents new campaign management tools and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. These developments are part of a commercial system still under development. The Sponsored Agents test should not be described as available to every brand or in every country.

Representing without improvising
Preparing such a channel should begin with the knowledge the agent is authorized to use. Materials, care, availability and services require sources that are kept up to date. When information is missing, the quality of the welcome depends on being able to say so and hand the conversation over.

The distinction between independent advice and a brand’s own voice must also remain clear throughout the exchange, not only when it begins. Personalization should not obscure on whose behalf an answer is given.

For luxury, the value of the format will therefore be judged beyond the click: does it help people understand a piece better, or merely produce more answers? A commercial conversation gains value only if it remains accurate, identifiable and connected to a human service able to take over.
