A few weeks ago, we headed off to Spain to discover two magnificent regions renowned for their vegetation and the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route that links them.

We arrived at Oviedo airport in Asturias and headed for Salinas for lunch. This is a beautiful seaside resort, dedicated to surfing as it organizes numerous events and competitions. It’s also the perfect place to sample Favala, the traditional Asturian dish.

We now head for Gijon to visit the Universidad Laboral de Gijón, a complex built under Franco and now a cultural and entertainment venue.

Asturias is the land of cider and cheese, with the widest variety of cheeses in Spain and the largest cider production in the world.

Asturias is famous for its gastronomy, especially seafood and Favala. We discovered some very good restaurants, notably Quince Nudos.

Asturias is where mountains meet the sea, resulting in some magnificent landscapes.

Much of Asturias’ history is linked to the “Indians”, those Asturians who fled misery to make a life for themselves in the Americas. They returned after making their fortune, and built themselves veritable palaces.

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, a pleasant city with a highly developed artistic life. It is also the starting point for the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela.
