An overview of the list: focus on the big winners and the main trends
Among the major hotel chains, the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts group reported the best performance, with six new five-star hotels in Florence, Italy; Geneva, Switzerland; Hangzhou, China; Papagayo, Costa Rica; Paris, France; and Whistler, Canada. It also dominates the overall ranking of five-star hotels, taking 26 of the 42 places. This is the first time in the group’s history that it has won six new five-star hotels in a single year.
Paris is the year’s big winner among new destinations, with nine five-star hotels: Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris; Hôtel Plaza Athénée; La Réserve Paris; Le Bristol Paris; Le Meurice; Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris; Mandarin Oriental, Paris; Peninsula Paris; and Shangri-La Hotel, Paris.
Italy also did very well, gaining eight new five-star hotels in its first year as a rated destination. With four five-star hotels (Hotel de Russie, Hotel Eden, Hotel Hassler Roma and J.K. Place Roma), Rome remains the luxury destination par excellence. Florence took three five-star awards (Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, Hotel Savoy, Portrait Firenze) and Milan won one (Mandarin Oriental, Milan).
In the Asia-Pacific region, the Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake became the first five-star hotel in this new destination. China now has a total of 10 five-star hotels, with three new winners this year. The Palace Hotel Tokyo became the first Japanese hotel to receive a five-star distinction. The Peninsula Group won two new five-star awards, one each for its Tokyo and Bangkok properties.
Numerous independent boutique hotels also continue to gain recognition worldwide, including the Goring Hotel, London; the J.K. Place Roma, Rome; La Réserve Paris; and the Portrait Firenze, Florence. All have won five-star awards for the first time. The Coworth Park, in the English county of Berkshire, also received the highest accolade – demonstrating that top-of-the-range amenities and service can be found everywhere, in every type of establishment and in every region of the world.
Langham Hotels & Resorts has won its first five-star award in the USA. The Langham, Chicago took top honors for both its hotel and spa.
Excellent results in the Caribbean and Mexico. In the Caribbean, five-star awards were won by both large group hotels, such as Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico’s A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and small independent boutique hotels, such as Barbados’ Sandy Lane Hotel. Mexico has six five-star hotels on the list, in Cabo San Lucas, Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Punta Mita.
In the United States, the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club has become the only five-star hotel on Cape Cod. This is the first time the establishment has achieved this distinction. It joins other five-star establishments in the country, located in cities as diverse as New York (eight five-star hotels); Las Vegas (five five-star hotels); and Park City, Utah (two five-star hotels).
