Raffles 1915 Gin, when a palace creates its own Gin

A few days ago, we were invited to the illustrious Royal Monceau to discover a Gin, but not just any Gin.

Independent distillery Sipsmith, a pioneer passionately committed to the revival of London’s craft gin, and international luxury hotel chain Raffles Hotels & Resorts have joined forces to create Raffles 1915 Gin.

Two major factors were behind this creation: 2015 marks the centenary of the birth of the famous Singapore Sling cocktail at Raffles; and the co-founder of Sipsmith, Sam Galsworthy, is the great-great-nephew of Sir Stamford Raffles, who gave his name to the hotel after founding the city of Singapore.

Peter French, President of Raffles Hotels & Resorts, commented:
“We were looking for a partner who could embody the convictions and demands to which our brand remains faithful. Sipsmith has real authenticity; they practice their craft like master craftsmen, respecting tradition. When we learned that Sam was the direct descendant of Sir Stamford Raffles, we were definitely won over. We’re delighted to create a gin with such evocative power, one that honors the past while inspiring future generations to explore and create.

Both Sipsmith and Raffles are capitalizing on the virtues of the past while remaining firmly focused on the future; they are writing a new page in their history by continuing to listen to their customers. “We like to think that Sipsmith stands at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, and that the two are a perfect match,” explains Sam Galsworthy.

Like all twelve Raffles hotels worldwide, Raffles 1915 Gin is a classic of its kind. Sipsmith’s master distiller, Jared Brown, hopes that this unique and complex gin, created in honor of the centenary of the Singapore Sling invented at Raffles Singapore, will inspire a new generation of bartenders to continue imagining divine gin-based cocktails, just as Ngiam Tong Boon did in 1915 with the Singapore Sling.

Handcrafted at Sipsmith’s London distillery exclusively for Raffles Hotels & Resorts, this blend offers an exceptional balance of Asian botanicals – jasmine flowers, fresh pomelo zest, lemongrass, Kaffir lime leaf, nutmeg and cardamom – distilled with some of the iconic botanicals used to make Sipsmith’s award-winning London Dry Gin. The result is a supple yet full-bodied spirit, characterized by the round mouthfeel of sweet orange combined with an elegant, bright and balanced finish.
Raffles 1915 Gin will be available in bars and lounges at Raffles Hotels & Resorts worldwide, initially in Paris, Dubai, Cambodia and Singapore, then in the Seychelles, China, Istanbul, Manila and Jakarta.

Sipsmith co-founder Sam Galsworthy said:
“We are extremely proud of the collaboration we have forged with Raffles Hotels & Resorts to celebrate this historic anniversary. As master distillers, we’re reaching out to spirits lovers who want to discover, taste and enjoy our products by bringing up to date the splendors of the past, from which we draw our inspiration. We’ve created a spicy gin that’s fabulously supple and inspiring, evoking the days when Singapore Sling was first tasted at the Long Bar in 1915. There’s little doubt that Ngiam Tong Boon and my great-great-great uncle, Sir Stamford Raffles, would have been very proud.”

Beyond the hype, this extremely fragrant gin is a pure marvel.
