Hair tousled by sea spray, golden tan, athletic figure: everyone has their own cinematic memory of actresses getting out of the water or by the pool.
Cinema has provided us with plenty of images of the famous swimsuit. Worn in summer or winter, on the edge of an infinity pool or in murkier waters, the swimsuit has gone through every treatment and adopted just about every look. Since its popularization in the 20s, thanks to the tanned complexion trend driven by Coco Chanel and the popularity of swimming, the swimsuit has shrunk, transformed into a bikini, monokini, graphic 1-piece or shaping 1-piece. Tinted or printed, the range expands every year. Summer’s not over yet, and there’s still the whole month of August to experiment with this little piece of fabric and adapt it to your look.
A resolutely effective classic: the bikini, in plain black or white. Timeless, it’s a safe bet you can always count on. From Romy Schneider frolicking with Delon in Derey’s La Piscine in 1969, to Cameron Diaz as a surfer spy for Charlie, the plain bikini suits every type of woman and every circumstance. For over 50 years, it has been worn by the greatest actresses…
The Spring Breakers gang of actresses splashed the screen in fluorescent neon, with a wardrobe composed mainly of bikinis. Mtv spirit, Spring Break: if you want to have fun and mix colors and shapes, the colorful mix and match of these no-holds-barred heroines will inspire you. The watchword: color. The goal: to be seen. Bikini top or bandeau with mismatched bottoms, colors burst forth like gaudy fireworks.
Attracted by the 50s, these retro heroines remain a great source of inspiration. Combining 1-pieces and 2-pieces to perfection. 2-pieces with high-waisted stockings, plunging breasts in balconnets: vintage sensuality, but not outdated. Plain, with Bardot-style gingham prints, with weights; the one-pieces (sometimes dreaded) and 2-pieces mark the waist and lightly cover the upper thighs: a pin-up look that makes you want to accessorize with butterfly glasses and a braided bag.
Young, mischievous, wanting to stand out: Bo Derek in Elle in 1978, braided hair and nude 1-piece swimsuit, marked a whole generation. A wild look. A beach life, detached from hotels and villas. A daring look, yes, but an effective one. No accessories, no sunscreen: we’re on fire. Pure, unadulterated sophistication (or so it seems!).
Sporty, James Bond-like: you’re not afraid of the swimsuit test, and it’s with confidence and your head held high that, like Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider or Halle Berry in James Bond, you run along the beaches. Free-spirited women: bikinis with sporty cuts that allow you to move without constraint are your best allies. Add a high ponytail or braid for an athletic look. A knife holder around the waist: maybe not…but a nice watch or effort meter around the arm: we can imagine it.
Of course, this list is far from exhaustive. I could have mentioned the famous low-cut red 1-piece from Baywatch (Aerobic look, 80s), re-examined Ursula Andress’ look in Dr No (from which Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry’s looks are directly derived), the 70s crocheted swimsuit, Princess Leia’s futuristic bra, Lolita’s light floral-print swimsuit, or even played the animal print card… There’s no shortage of examples in the movies.
For this season, here are 5 looks that are always effective, and distinct enough to turn August into a scorching summer, a killer summer, a summer …
