Sephora Beautiful Club: Six Athletes Redefining What Beauty Can Be

Patron Marie Patouillet, judoka Romane Dicko, skipper Violette Dorange: Sephora brings together six French female athletes around a vision of beauty that begins where you choose to be yourself.

In the lexicon of commercial beauty, the words “inclusion” and “authenticity” are often promises that the casting contradicts. Sephora has taken the opposite approach: letting bodies speak before formulas.

Six women, six ways of embodying oneself

Marie Patouillet, a para-cyclist and the program’s patron, sets the tone. A medalist and advocate for the normal representation of disability in public life, she isn’t there to “inspire”—a loaded term that often reduces people with disabilities to a symbolic role. She’s here because she’s an athlete, and because Sephora was smart enough not to ask her to be anything else.

The five other members of the Beautiful Club paint a multifaceted portrait of women’s sports in France: Romane Dicko (judo), Flora Vautier (para-table tennis), Violette Dorange (sailing), Perrine Laffont (mogul skiing), and Sandra Laoura (para-cycling). These aren’t polished faces chosen to illustrate a campaign—they’re women whose bodies have been shaped by hard work, setbacks, and comebacks.

“Something beautiful brings us together”

The campaign’s tagline—“Something beautiful brings us together”—works precisely because it doesn’t define that “something.” It lets the viewer fill in the blank in their own way. This is a rare editorial choice in mass-market advertising, where closed messages are usually preferred over open-ended questions.

Beauty begins when we choose to be ourselves.

This phrase, placed at the heart of the campaign, conveys an important truth: beauty isn’t a state achieved through the right products, but a decision we make every morning. The paradox of selling cosmetics with this message is obvious to everyone—but Sephora embraces it, and that in itself is a statement.

What beauty can still claim

The Beautiful Club is not the first program of its kind in the industry. But it comes at a time when women’s sports in France are enjoying unprecedented visibility—the Paris Games have left a lasting impression on the public’s perception, television viewership for women’s competitions has increased, and sponsorship contracts are getting longer.

Sephora is certainly riding this wave. But the impact is real: millions of women who follow these athletes for their performances will see them champion a vision of beauty that demands nothing of them—not thinness, not the absence of scars, and not conformity to a preconceived ideal.

The Beautiful Club program is available at sephora.fr/beautiful-club.html. What you find there will vary with each visit—and that may be the point.
