Crystal maker Saint Louis and artists Perrin & Perrin have teamed up to create their new paperweight collection. A few days ago, we had the privilege of attending the presentation at their Vitry sur Seine workshop.
The Rift model
Saint Louis is renowned for creating crystal pieces crafted by master glassmakers and master cutters, among the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France.
Their know-how is handed down from generation to generation, and increasingly advanced crystal coloring techniques are introduced: hot masonry, cold cutting, engraving of the most sophisticated motifs, and gold decoration.
The Mesa model
Martine and Jacki Perrin have made glass their main field of activity since the late 90s. Such is the complexity of this material, that the couple decided to study it rigorously in order to rework and reconstruct it, exploring its technical possibilities and aesthetic qualities to the full.
Their working methods have been adapted to the know-how of Saint Louis craftsmen, and therefore also to the unforeseen demands of crystal.
The Lapilli model
In this collection, paperweights are subtly taken out of their primary function, through their elegance, the mystery evoked by their shape and the use of black and white, while still retaining a sense of whimsy.
This was made possible by the encounter between the artist and the craftsman: a kind of disagreement is felt through the object, resulting in an enigmatic work that invites us to escape both by touch and by thought.
The collection, designed by Martine and Jacki Perrin and made with crystal from the Saint Louis manufactures, comprises three paperweights: Rift, Mesa and Lapilli. Each piece is numbered and limited to 17 pieces.
