Triptych 2019: Barons de Rothschild Captures a Vintage Marred by Unpredictable Weather

Every year, Guillaume Lété sets himself the same challenge: to blend the same three grands crus to create “Triptyque,” the vintage cuvée from Maison Champagne Barons de Rothschild. The 2019 vintage, marked by frost followed by a heat wave, has become as much a record of the weather as it is a wine.

Some vintages strive for consistency, while others embrace the unique character of each year. Triptyque belongs to the latter category. Inspired by the Rothschild family’s Grands Vins, this cuvée from the House of Barons de Rothschild takes on a challenge that seems contradictory at first glance: to reproduce, year after year, the same blend of three grands crus— Avize, Ambonnay, and Aÿ, chosen for their complementary qualities in keeping with the House’s style, while allowing the vintage to express itself fully. Guillaume Lété, who oversees its production, treats it as an exercise in precision rather than pure creativity: the same musical score, played each time by a different “climat.”

What sets Triptyque apart within the estate’s portfolio is also its aging process: as the only wine vinified and aged entirely in stainless steel tanks, it prioritizes tension and aromatic precision over oak influence. This technical approach, in the House’s own words, makes it a sort of snapshot of the vintage, capable of faithfully reflecting the climatic variations that characterize the three blended terroirs.

The 2019 vintage provides a vivid illustration of this. Following a mild, sunny winter and a rainy spring, it initially suffered from frost episodes, particularly in Avize, on the Chardonnay plots that are part of the blend. The summer that followed did nothing to improve consistency: hot and dry, it saw heat waves of unprecedented intensity for the region, before a saving rain in late July revived the grapes’ ripening at the very last moment. The harvest, which began in mid-September, yielded a moderate crop in terms of volume but one marked by remarkable concentration and aromatic intensity.

It is precisely this tension between climatic adversity and the promise of balance that Triptyque 2019 is meant to convey on the palate. Vintage champagne, by its very nature, always serves as a witness: it does not seek to erase the vagaries of a given year, but rather to integrate them into a final harmony. With the increasingly frequent return of extreme weather events in Champagne—spring frosts on one hand, summer heat waves on the other—this role as a witness takes on particular significance: each vintage becomes as much an archive of climate disruption as it is an oenological feat.

Triptyque 2019 is available in 75-cl bottles for 103 euros at the winery’s online store, at wine shops, and through the hospitality industry. Beyond the product itself, it is the concept of an “instant” wine that captures the imagination: a cuvée that does not claim to master the climate, but rather chooses to preserve its memory, glass after glass, vintage after vintage.
