BROOKLYN – LONDON – CANNES
For the first time in Cannes, from May 15 to 23, an ephemeral venue will be entirely designed by an international artistic revelation: LA CHAMBRE NOIRE by Theophilus London.
For the past 3 years, on the 1st floor of the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Belvedere vodka has been creating a unique space in Cannes for creative people of all kinds to meet, against a backdrop of quirky photo-shoots, exclusive parties and Belvedere cocktails.
A heterogeneous universe rethought for each edition, LA CHAMBRE NOIRE showcases a whole range of new talents and territories of unprecedented artistic expression. Through offbeat, musical aperitifs, cultures mingle on the vibes of the Brooklyn underground.
We caught up with Theophilus London for a colorful interview.
Theophilus London is a multi-disciplinary artist inspired by the world and turned towards others. He expresses his talents in music and fashion, pushing his boundless imagination in an ongoing quest for the Beautiful. An insatiable performer, his transversality has made his reputation.
Theophilus London is one of today’s hottest artists, mixing genres and repertoires. An accomplished musician, his soulful pop and post-punk songs, tinged with Rn’B and Electro, have the international song world buzzing. A fashion icon and stylist, he plays up his status as a “new hipster” dandy by collaborating with numerous artists.
“I want guests to come and experience the place I’ve imagined, mixing the vibes of New York with those of Cannes. LA CHAMBRE NOIRE is ‘the place to be’: the place to see and be seen.”
“I want to shock people, I want this place to be the craziest and trendiest in Cannes. I want to bring truth and innovation to this room. I want to change the rules bring back my energy and my sense of music.”
“I’ll be inviting special guests like Brodinski and lots of other friends. I want to be like Andy Warhol, I want to bring back energy, peace and love.”
“I don’t want this to be a bourgeois place, I want it to be young and fresh.”
Renowned for its edgy, intimate ambience, LA CHAMBRE NOIRE’s third edition features an explosive line-up, inspired by Theophilus London and Aline Afanoukoé.
In addition to the showcases and DJ’s selectors, Theophilus London will of course be on hand to welcome his guests and provide a number of highlights, including a live set featuring exclusive tracks from his new album, a DJ set with one of his friends and a mix of other artistic performances.
Alongside Theophilus London every evening, Aline will take the microphone and perform on the terrace, accompanied by her artist friends.
DESIGN
Theophilus London put his heart and soul into every detail of “HIS” CHAMBRE NOIRE.
From the design of the photo studio, through the lounge to the terrace, everything has been imagined in line with his preferred areas: the mix of genres, a precise taste for pretty things and an omnipresent musicality.
LA CHAMBRE NOIRE plays the American card with a Brooklyner loft. A gigantic mural drawn in pencil catches the eye; a view of the rooftops, skyscrapers and, further on, part of the famous bridge dresses the space in waxed concrete. Low seats, table d’hôtes, trendy and unusual furniture, the design is above all that of a New Yorker with a passion for Art, in transit in Cannes.
A theater of artistic expression, LA CHAMBRE NOIRE by Theophilus London will host paintings selected by the master of the house, works by his “friendly connections”, artists from different horizons.
Every evening on the terrace, a tasting of Belvedere cocktails is offered around the concept bar inspired by the industrial spirit of New York.
A perfectionist to the extreme, Theophilus London also signs all the Staff’s outfits.
For his VIP friends, Theophilus London also takes the camera for a few exclusive shots.
Shooting by appointment only.
BELVEDERE COCKTAILS
The bar at LA CHAMBRE NOIRE is dedicated to the art of Mixology. Theophilus will name all the cocktails and create some crazy ones.
Since its inception, the common thread running through Belvedere cocktails has always been the same: to offer new, surprising and always delicious taste experiences. The watchword for this 2014 edition: Pimp my cocktail!
On demand, mixologists revisit the iconic Collins, Sour or Gimlet cocktails in bold new ways. The deal: provoke a Brooklyn/Cannes encounter by adapting your “drink” with purely American ingredients (pickles, strawberry cupcake, blueberry muffin, apple and cinnamon pie, key lime, bacon).
