Jo Malone London warms Christmas with a Scotch whisky and vanilla accord

There are olfactory pairings that seem self-evident once one has smelled them, and others one must dare to compose. Jo Malone London chooses the second option to dress Christmas 2026, marrying the softness of vanilla with the intensity of a Scotch whisky accord in a new cologne named Vanilla Scotch.

Presented as the scent of the season, Vanilla Scotch draws on the charm of a festive escape to the heart of the Highlands, a geographic anchoring that is far from trivial for a British house seeking to reaffirm its roots at the holidays. The composition opens with a Scotch whisky accord as top note, continues with a heart of vanilla and closes on a base of golden amber — a classic architecture of a gourmand perfume, but whose opening ingredient stands out in the usual landscape of Christmas colognes, more readily turned towards spices or citrus. A choice that also contrasts with the more expected Christmas collections, often built around warm spices or candied citrus, and that recalls that the London house built its reputation on unexpected olfactory pairings rather than on the already well-trodden paths of the genre.

According to Céline Roux, Global Head of Fragrance of the house, this whisky note draws on aged oak casks and reveals a subtle smoky facet, while the vanilla, described as deep and generous, nonetheless retains a form of freshness. The result, in her words, gives birth to a warm, seductive, assertive and sophisticated fragrance — a definition that places Vanilla Scotch at the crossroads of winter comfort and a certain British elegance, between sipping whisky and pastry sweetness. The roasted tonka bean, mentioned by the house as an additional element of the composition, reinforces this pastry dimension while bringing a slightly bitter note that keeps the whole from tipping into an over-uniform sweetness.

This new gourmand creation comes as a 30 ml cologne at €76 and a 100 ml at €156, as well as a classic scented candle at €68, two formats designed to accompany personal use as well as the staging of an interior during the celebrations. It joins a broader Christmas collection, available online and in Jo Malone London boutiques from October 2026. This rollout in three formats, from the compact bottle to the candle, also multiplies the entry points into the universe of this new scent, without imposing at the outset the commitment that a full bottle of cologne represents.

It is impossible to mention the holidays at Jo Malone London without mentioning the return of its Advent Calendar, reinvented this year as a Christmas Chest sold at €450. The principle remains faithful to the house’s tradition: a selection of iconic and seasonal colognes, miniature candles and bath and body care in reduced sizes, completed by a travel candle and a 30 ml festive fragrance. But the object does not stop at 24 December — once fully uncovered, this Kist, a Scottish term for a chest, turns into a storage space for jewellery, buttons, haberdashery items or stationery, thus extending its function well beyond the calendar itself. A way, no doubt, of justifying its price through a second life rather than through the already fleeting pleasure of opening the little doors each day.

Still, this balancing act between indulgence and sophistication is not without risk: whisky, a raw material associated with adult tasting and a certain gravity, coexists here with vanilla, the most immediately reassuring note in Western perfumery. By choosing to make them converse rather than decide between the two registers, Jo Malone London bets on an audience able to appreciate this tension, without seeking to resolve it through a more consensual olfactory ease.
