The MSC group’s luxury cruise brand signs a letter of intent with Dutch shipyard Den Breejen Shipyard to build its first river fleet, with sales due to open in 2027.
An ocean cruise brand turning to rivers is never a trivial gesture: it is an admission that the open sea, however vast, no longer suffices to contain an ambition. Explora Journeys, the MSC group’s premium sea-travel brand, has just signed a letter of intent with Dutch shipyard Den Breejen Shipyard for the construction of its first luxury river vessels, marking its announced entry into the river cruise market.
Since its launch, Explora Journeys has been built around an openly stated philosophy, dubbed “Ocean State of Mind”, which combines the freedom of sea travel with a certain European refinement, in both hospitality and design. The challenge now is to transpose the same approach to the continent’s most emblematic rivers — an exercise that requires rethinking the codes of the ship entirely, from its scale to its rhythm of navigation, since river cruising imposes constraints of locks, draught and size that the open sea happily ignores.
The press release remains sober for now on details: the design of the vessels, the onboard experiences, the delivery schedule and the first itineraries will be specified later, while the opening of sales is not planned until 2027. This discretion, far from being a flaw, perhaps says something about the brand’s method, which built its reputation at sea on a promise of exclusivity rather than speed of execution — Explora Journeys having always taken the time, since its launch, to refine every aspect of its experience before presenting it publicly.
The choice of a Dutch partner is not insignificant either: the Netherlands is among the historic strongholds of river boat building, inland navigation being an old tradition there and a recognised expertise across Europe. By teaming up with Den Breejen Shipyard, Explora Journeys relies on local know-how rather than seeking to transpose, without adaptation, the construction methods of its ocean liners.
This diversification also illustrates a broader trend in the luxury cruise sector, where the major groups now seek to cover the full spectrum of nautical travel rather than confining themselves to a single segment. By adding river cruising to its ocean offer, Explora Journeys follows this logic of diversification, at a time when ultra-high-end clientele increasingly travel in short, themed stages rather than single great crossings.
It remains that the arrival of an ocean luxury player in the already crowded market of prestige river cruising will not fail to reshuffle the cards in a sector where the intimacy of the river imposes very different rules from those of the open sea — and where the promise of refinement will, this time, have to prove itself at the scale of a cabin rather than a liner, in a relationship to space and landscape entirely different from the one the brand has cultivated at sea until now.
