Alex Knost meets Kurt Cobain to the sound of MGMT. Psychedelic surf grunge. We’ve got the vision, now we let ourselves go. Live fast, burn it all, leave your stuffy suburb and marry a model. Rock’n’roll mythology became the lyrical basis for Heidi Silmane’s collections for Saint Laurent. Against fashion, erected as a uniform for many. Slim black, leather perfecto, plaid shirt, leopard print and weight: the allure of the lead singer, stripped of all duty except to himself.

The kind of casualness that dreams are made of. A utopian life, as fantasized by many Venice Beach kids, with Jay Adams at the top of the list. Surfing, skateboarding every day with no accountability. Saint Laurent’s collections, more than just printed bombers, slim-fitting jackets and tight pants, allow us to succumb to a cinematic reverie.

This time, Heidi Silmane pays tribute to California’s surf music culture. Already in 2011, the “California Song” exhibition at MOCA in Los Angels presented photographs from her “California Cycle”. Intimately linked to music, the creator reinvented rock band reporting in the mid-2000s. Nourished by this aesthetic, his collections are marked by the years when he photographed The Libertines and Franz Ferdinand.

To revive the casual look, you need first and foremost a solid, precise academic knowledge and an acute mastery of the classics. Looking unkempt takes hard work: the quality of cuts and the mastery of fabrics are essential. Here, Silmane’s classics are given a Californian twist with tropical prints, psychedelic Tie and Die, slip-on sneakers and knee-high ripped jeans.

Washed-out pastel blond, youthful lightness, it all makes you want to listen to Oracular Spectacular again on the Venice pier…even if it’s no longer the Z-Boys pier.
