In 2000, CAMUS launched EXTRA Elégance: an ambitious Cognac whose contemporary design has left its mark on the history of Cognac. Now, with Extra Dark & Intense, EXTRA reveals its darker side.
The mystery of Camus EXTRA Dark & Intense lies in the eaux-de-vie meticulously selected by its Maitre de Chai, and in the casks that are racked, opened and then gently exposed to an open flame at a controlled temperature. This action regenerates the barrels’ aromatic potential. A highly specific aging process for an intense, spicy finish.
Based on the idea of offering an intense, spicy version of Extra in the same way as a more intense fragrance in perfumery, Patrick Léger – the Cellar Master at Maison CAMUS – selected the eaux-de-vie and the casks in which they are stored on the basis of very specific characteristics.
The idea is then to assign them a very specific ageing process. Each selected barrel is carefully racked, then opened by the Master Cooper to be re-toasted, in order to regenerate its full aromatic potential. This delicate and meticulous operation is carried out on a barrel-by-barrel basis.
The casks are then filled with their original Cognac for a special finishing phase, in which the Cognac acquires its full complexity. Rich and spicy, this Extra could hardly be called anything else than Dark & Intense.
Robe: sparkling, with hints of mahogany and topaz.
Nose: solid and powerful, with notes of crème brûlée, gingerbread and toasted macadamia nuts.
Palate: intense, with creamy, buttery notes, a robust, persistent finish marked by notes of subtly spicy bitter chocolate.
