Patek Philippe Annual Calendar

In 2016, Patek Philippe celebrates the 20th anniversary of its patented Quantième Annuel, a complete calendar requiring only one correction per year. In two decades, the Manufacture has already launched 21 models of this useful complication, not counting the many gold and platinum variations and their dial variants. Now it’s time to unveil the 22nd model, the new Quantième Annuel reference 5396, available in 18-carat white gold with a dark gray “sunray” dial, and in 18-carat pink gold with a silvered opaline dial.

The Quantième Annuel reference 5396 looks both familiar and new. Familiar because it features familiar stylistic elements. New because it combines these details in a new, timeless way. The shape of the case recalls the first Calatrava model from 1932. Its curvature extends dynamically and elegantly into the strap attachments, while a smooth polished bezel surrounds a domed sapphire crystal, giving the watch volume and a very modern look.
The dial also features familiar elements, but subtly reworked and combined in innovative ways. The day and month appear in a double aperture below 12 o’clock, the date in a large aperture at 6 o’clock. Visual balance is ensured by the 24-hour sub-dial, with moon-phase indication, occupying the lower half.
The display of calendar time underlines the watch’s strong personality, with a minute track forming a crown of small round gold hour-markers, applied Breguet numerals in 18-carat gold distinguished by their three-dimensional effect, “dauphine”-shaped hour and minute hands and a slender seconds hand.
At the heart of the new Quantième Annuel reference 5396 beats a self-winding 324 S QA LU 24H mechanical caliber. Its calendar only needs to be corrected by hand once a year, when it changes from February to March, while the moon phase deviates from the true lunar cycle by just one day in 122 years. A glance through the sapphire crystal caseback shows that this precise and reliable movement, with its useful complication, is also a model of good craftsmanship.
The new Quantième Annuel reference 5396 is available in two versions with distinctive characters. Classic, elegant styling in 18-carat 5N rose gold, with a silvered opaline dial, numerals, hour-markers and hands in the same gold as the case, and a chocolate-brown alligator strap with Calatrava folding clasp. Modern, technical styling for 18-carat white gold, with dark galvanic gray dial enhanced by “sunburst” decoration, applied Breguet numerals, hour-markers and hands in white gold and matte black alligator strap with Calatrava white gold folding clasp.
