Lightness is the key word for the latest collection from Swiss watchmaker Rado, both in terms of aesthetics and the materials used. With this watchword in mind, renowned trendsetter Lidewij Edelkoort turned her attention to these Rado timepieces, placing them alongside exclusive design objects in an exhibition showcasing the interplay between Rado’s lightweight innovations and Lidewij Edelkoort’s unique vision of a lighter lifestyle.
Rado’s latest exceptional models are made from high-tech ceramics, the brand’s signature material and one of the most durable and lightweight materials used in luxury watchmaking. The designs are light and airy: the True Open Heart, with its diaphanous mother-of-pearl dial, evokes a feeling of lightness, while the new True Thinline watches, with their clean lines and ultra-thin profiles, seem to float on the wrist.

In search of lightness
Lidewij Edelkoort, renowned trend consultant and editor, has made a name for herself as a forecaster of a world swept up in revolutionary change. In Designing Lightness, her latest collaboration with Rado, Lidewij Edelkoort combines the latest Rado watch collection with art objects made from light fabrics, delicate porcelain and draped, quilted or slightly curved materials. This exhibition underscores his observation that today’s design is in search of lightness: “Today, design is transported and worn, feather-light fabrics clothe our bodies, and slim, sober watches stretch towards infinity. The material is the message. Mindfulness is the movement.
Lidewij Edelkoort added: “Rado watches are simple, serene and soothing. They are created for the individual, not for the public. They offer an incredible feeling of lightness when worn. From their delicate dials to their smooth silhouettes, the horological details are intimate and intense, centered on the fundamental elements, calm and invisible time.”
