AlUla, a destination already prized for its exceptional cultural and natural heritage, is about to charm the world of luxury. Located 1,100 km from Riyadh, this Saudi gem, where history meets the present, announces the opening of four luxury hotels that embody both the architectural excellence and authenticity of the place.
The future Sharaan Resort, designed by renowned architect Jean Nouvel, is a prime example. This is no mere hotel complex, but a true architectural masterpiece. Conceived as a joint venture between the renowned French firm Bouygues Construction and the Saudi engineering firm Almabani, the resort draws its inspiration from the ancestral techniques of the Nabataeans. Over 2,000 years ago, the Nabataeans mastered the art of integrating their buildings into the surrounding landscape, a feat that Jean Nouvel has brilliantly reinterpreted.
But beyond the architecture, the Sharaan Resort is also an ode to sustainability. Everything has been designed to ensure perfect harmony with the environment. Preliminary studies have led to the implementation of energy-efficient strategies to ensure optimum comfort in both summer and winter. What’s more, the emphasis is on rational water use, with wastewater recycling processes.
Cloud 7 Residence AlUla, meanwhile, is already well established with 150 bungalows. By the end of 2023, this residence will add a further 150 bungalows, reinforcing its commitment to the socio-economic development of the region. Aimed at short and medium-term stays, Cloud 7 blends modernity with deep roots in the local culture, offering residents an incomparable immersive experience.
Le Chedi Hegra, a prestigious boutique hotel, will have the honor of being the only establishment located directly on the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra. In addition to its exceptional location, this architectural gem is committed to an eco-responsible approach, reusing existing structures such as a former railway station.
Nature lovers will be enchanted by the upscale Dar Tantora by The House Hotel ecolodge, which preserves the charm of historic mud buildings while offering modern facilities.
Finally, the Azulik resort promises total immersion in nature. Nestled in the heart of the canyons, this luxury resort combines luxury and ecology, while protecting the region’s rocky heritage.
The ambition of these hotels is clear: to offer an incomparable luxury experience while respecting AlUla’s rich heritage and natural beauty. Phillip Jones, Chief Tourism Officer for the Royal Commission for AlUla, underlines this vision, saying that these establishments embody “what makes AlUla a special destination”.
AlUla recorded 185,000 visitors in 2022. With these new openings, the region hopes to welcome 250,000 visitors by 2023, consolidating its position as one of Saudi Arabia’s must-visit luxury destinations.
