Riva 54Metri: When a Legend Takes on a New Scale

There is a logic of grandeur that seems to contradict that of beauty. Riva, a shipyard founded in 1842 in Sarnico, on the shores of Lake Iseo, built its legend on intimacy: the Aquarama, launched in 1962, was no more than eight meters long. This varnished mahogany boat, which could be spotted on the French Riviera with Brigitte Bardot or Mastroianni on board, became one of the most recognizable symbols of 20th-century luxury—precisely because it was on a human scale.

The Riva 54Metri changes the game. With a 54-meter hull—the largest boat ever to roll off the brand’s production line—Riva isn’t turning its back on its heritage. It’s amplifying it. And that’s where things get interesting.

Excess as the heir to refinement

The 54Metri belongs to the superyacht category: these private vessels represent one of the most discreet and dynamic markets in the global luxury industry. The Ferretti Group, which has owned Riva since 2000, has made moving upmarket a core strategy. But the Riva brand resists any deviation from its image: every model, whether 8 meters or 54 meters long, must embody the same commitment to design excellence.

What the press release announces—referring to “54 meters of extraordinary beauty” and a “masterpiece of elegance and majesty”—is confirmation of a breakthrough: Riva is entering the realm of ultra-luxury custom-built yachts, a market usually dominated by Lürssen, Feadship, or Benetti. Entering this territory with the Aquarama’s DNA is a gamble that is as ambitious as it is risky.

What 54 meters entails

A superyacht of this size requires a crew of ten to fifteen people. It offers living spaces comparable to those of a luxury villa, gyroscopic stabilization systems, and the ability to sail autonomously on the high seas. It is purchased individually, often built to order, by clients whose names appear nowhere. It’s another world—or rather, it’s the logical extension of the Riva world, simply on a grander scale.

Because the real question isn’t whether Riva can build a 54-meter yacht. The real question is whether Riva can build a 54-meter yacht and still remain true to itself. On the water, just as in fashion or fine jewelry, formal consistency at every scale is the ultimate test of a brand’s identity.

The Aquarama remains the masterpiece. The 54Metri is its most ambitious successor. Between them lie 182 years of expertise and a single question—what is beauty on the water?—to which Riva has always given the same answer.
