PR Harlem Portraits, Harvey Stein

This book is the first photographic encounter between renowned New York photographer Harvey Stein and the streets of Harlem. An encounter that began at the annual African-American parade on Malcolm X Boulevard in 1990. Impressed and moved by the spirit and humanity of this legendary neighborhood and its inhabitants. Harvey Stein photographed Harlem for 22 years from 1990 to 2012. Harlem Street Portrait publishes intimate, expressive portraits of the people of Harlem. With a single desire, to show the great sense of community of this neighborhood that attracts visitors from all over the world. 166 black-and-white photographs reveal the human warmth, dynamism and vitality of this historic neighborhood. Each portrait is more than a representation of a person, it’s a reflection of the intimate, requiring a reciprocal commitment between photographer and subject. The book also features essays by African-American professor and activist Herb Boyd and New Yorker Miss Rosen.
