Nature under the microscope

Pictures by Christopher Macsurak

Continuing his naturalist themes, Basil Soda puts the organic world under the microscope for his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Seemingly simple, close-cut elements come together in patterns similar to a hawk’s breast. By gently pulling apart the feathers, a new reading of the structures is brought to light by careful observation.
Each new layer reveals the complexity of molecular constructions. In the rich tradition of Couture, Basil Soda has reduced these natural assemblages to their constituent elements before reconstructing them for a new interpretation.
Delicate lace strands and silk threads mingle with aged gold twigs to become stems supporting crystal buds, while a translucent silk veil becomes a second skin under which delicately geometric organic patterns are revealed.
Skilfully constructed dress tops continue in layers of vaporous lace and pleated georgette for a resolutely contemporary silhouette. A delicate palette of pink, flesh, pale gray and white is punctuated by yellow and cinnamon, like the sun rising over the age of new romanticism.
This collection is a universal ode to femininity and the strength of every woman.
