AAM Edition publishes beautiful books on Paris, available in all bookshops and in particular in bookshops such as Librairie du Bon Marché, Librairie Hermès, Artcurial, Galignani, Librairie du Musée des Arts Décoratifs…

We were particularly taken by these collections dedicated to Paris and art deco.

SAINT-GERMAIN-DES-PRES 1900-1950 ART NOUVEAU ART DECO

An abbey, legendary brasseries such as Lipp, Les Deux Magots and the Café de Flore, the Mediterranean, the birthplace of existentialism, a mecca for culture, fashion and decoration, Saint-Germain-des-Prés also boasts a fabulous Art Nouveau and Art Deco architectural heritage. This book reveals all the treasures that made the district so mythical between 1900 and 1950.

MONTMARTRE 1900-1930 ART NOUVEAU ART DECO

The Place du Tertre and the Sacré-Coeur Basilica are appreciated the world over, while the Chat Noir and Lapin Agile cabarets and the Bateau-Lavoir have made Montmartre part of history. Jean Renoir’s La Complainte de la Butte celebrates the rue Saint-Vincent, but the genius of the place is also evident in the facades of the houses and the sumptuous architectural details.

From the end of the 19th century to 1914, Montmartre was the artistic capital of Paris. Painters, sculptors, poets and famous or up-and-coming writers all had their studios and cafés here. The Villa des Arts dates back to this period, with its artists’ studios forming a cascade of glass, still astonishing in its audacity today.

Art Nouveau fashions are expressed in door frames, cornices and balconies with curves and flowers, while Sarreguemines earthenware tiles adorn the entrances to public baths and many apartment building lobbies.

After the First World War, Montmartre ceded artistic leadership to Montparnasse, but became a melting pot for Art Deco. The “maquis”, a picturesque collection of huts, barracks and shelters, was replaced by Avenue Junot. With its curves and steep slopes, the new avenue is home to an exceptional collection of buildings, making it one of the most original in Paris.

Illustrated with photographs by France de Griessen, this is the first book to explore the Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture of the illustrious Butte.

MONTPARNASSE 1900-1930 ART NOUVEAU ART DECO

Between 1900 and 1930, artists from all walks of life made Montparnasse and its surroundings a cultural landmark. The Vavin crossroads became the center of the world. This book reveals a lesser-known aspect of this effervescence, that of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture that marked the urban landscape: artists’ studios, tenement buildings, HBM, churches and public buildings, but also bars, dancings and restaurants: Le Select, La Coupole, La Closerie des Lilas… The buildings were designed by well-known architects such as Henri Sauvage, Michel Roux-Spitz and Louis Sue, as well as by others whose talent has been forgotten, but whose work is highlighted by the photographs of France de Griessen. A whole part of the legend of the cosmopolitan and artistic Paris of the first half of the 20th century comes to life on these pages.

MONTPARNASSE DU REVE, AN ART DECO WAY OF LIFE

Between the wars, Montparnasse became an artistic hub to which the whole world converged. Bars, cafés and dance halls such as Le Sélect, La Coupole, La Closerie des Lilas, La Rotonde, Le Dôme… welcomed artists and a public seduced by the incredible spirit of freedom here, symbolized by the unforgettable Kiki, Queen of Montparnasse.

It was the reign of a café life that existed neither in England nor in America. The “Montparno” style was born of this daily interaction. In artists’ studios and workshops, in modern interiors, we witness the emergence of a new, modern and relaxed way of life, far removed from social conventions and prevailing tastes.

Montparnasse dethroned Montmartre, welcomed modern art and attracted cubists, futurists, orphists, dadaists and surrealists. Hemingway rubbed shoulders with Picasso and Gertrude Stein was not far away.

The spirit of Montparnasse spread rapidly, permeating architecture, interior design, graphics, fashion, tableware, fabrics, objects, materials and the colors of the time. Publishing and illustration also enjoyed a golden age. The beginnings of feminism, new music and dance imported from the Americas, African art, the emergence of theAmerican bar, the consumption of cocktails and Bullier’s themed balls made up the living soul of an effervescent district.

Through numerous rare documents and contemporary photographs by France de Griessen, this book traces the brief, intense moment that made Paris a magnet and beacon for the art world. Lovers of the beauty of Art Deco, designers and today’s public will find the evocation of this unique art of living a fantastic source of inspiration.
