G-Star RAW and the Dutch National Ballet join forces for a unique collaboration in which the “new reality” of social distancing, is presented in an artistic way. This partnership is inspired by empty halls, artists deprived of a stage and singular dances to find their way back to a new normal. This society of social distancing is symbolized by a very special choreography, of which an impressive 3-meter-diameter denim tutu is the centerpiece.
For this collaboration, G-Star RAW brought together the worlds of classical and modern dance by creating a unique raw denim tutu with a diameter of 3 meters: the ultimate accessory for social distancing. It allows the National Ballet dancers to remain 1.5 meters apart. This choreography highlights the distances between the dancers, materialized by the size of the tutu. The challenge for the artists was to make their way through the streets of Amsterdam to the National Ballet, attracted by the music coming from the hall. Renowned Dutch House / Techno DJ and producer Joris Voorn, and the strings of the “Le Ballet” orchestra created a piece of “fusion” music for this project. Gwenda van Vliet – Chief Marketing Officer, G-Star: “Restrictions offer us new opportunities. In recent months, we’ve always sought to reinterpret this reality in unexpected, artistic and innovative ways. We’ve focused on what’s possible, not what’s impossible. This created new collaborations and concepts that would not have happened otherwise. We’re proud of this beautiful story of timeless denim, dance, music and craftsmanship, of these different worlds. Let’s show together that we can succeed.” Remi Wörtmeyer – choreographer & principal soloist at Ballet National: “A tutu of this size forces the dancers to find solutions for moving together whatever the spaces.”
