An orange shadow in a blue suit has cut himself a suit. Inevitable and unavoidable topic: Donald Trump is the 45th President of the United States. Unease, hatred, rising violence in a world that no longer seems to find faith in its political representatives. This is a major change, with repercussions in all areas of our lives. Producing, consuming, dressing, designing, selling: what does the future hold for fashion? It’s not the most urgent topic, but it’s one that’s far from flippant or pointless.

In concrete terms, what does the arrival of this character at the head of the United States mean?

Dollars, commerce and the wolf of Wall Street.

Since yesterday, questions of trade policy have taken hold of the fashion world. Experts are examining the consequences of opposition to the transatlantic free trade agreement and a battle announced against the Chinese market. Declining investment in American textiles and the withdrawal of Chinese patrons are discussed. Yet in just a few years, they have become key players, ensuring the survival of many luxury brands. In Europe, Americans are among the most important apparel customers. Rick Helfeinbein, President of AAFA (American Apparel and Footwear Association), deplores a situation in which the trade is one of the big losers.

Fashion’s Purple Cry

A call for change. There are many interpretations of this vote, none of which stands alone. The causes are multiple. Today, the most important thing for designers is to remain open and curious: to let American creativity shine through. The fashion world has spoken out: Diane Von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang have made their feelings known. At American Vogue, Anna Wintour’s support for Hilary Clinton was public and assertive. The latter helped finance the candidate. Under the advice of the fashion papessa, Hilary appeared in a mauve Ralph Lauren suit, the designer who dressed her for most of her campaign. A mauve symbol of dignity. A gesture filled with the class and poetry of flannel and chiffon, which only the world of fashion can perpetuate.

Trump Reality show, implants, $: farewell to poise

Dark suits and red ties: the uniform of businessmen encased in glass buildings, ivory towers that cut them off from the effervescence of the street. From their offices, American presidents have carried with them the myth of their stature. Class and style take on national importance. A man’s power is his style. Is bling bling making a comeback? Before drowning in a field of sequins, blow-dries and gold watches, let’s take a look back at the looks of the most legendary of them all: JFK. Cufflinks, tails, Burberry jacket and Omega watch from a legendary figure.

A new balance of power in the fashion industry, which will have to take note of the radical trade measures announced. Fashion as witness, fashion as weapon, fashion is worthy.
