Through 21 major sites, the Châteaux de la Loire offer a rich and varied cultural program throughout the year. Exhibitions, concerts and shows offer an insight into both history and the contemporary era, in a variety of styles. A wide choice to appeal to all audiences.
Château de Sully-sur-Loire
Built at the end of the 14th century, the Château de Sully-sur-Loire is the eastern gateway to the Châteaux de la Loire and the UNESCO World Heritage site. With its moats still filled with water, its keeps and high towers, the medieval fortress takes visitors back to the Middle Ages. From June 21 to September 21, 2014, you can discover Antoine Schneck’s exhibition “Les Gisants”, a photographic exhibition created around the recumbent figures of kings and queens of France, at the Basilique de Saint-Denis. These unique portraits are full of history and emotion. In addition to these portraits, Antoine Schneck will give an artistic interpretation of the tomb of the Duc de Sully.
Cité Royale de Loches
The Cité Royale, a harmonious blend of Middle Ages and Renaissance architecture, features a 36-meter-high keep, one of the tallest of its time, emblematic of 11th-century military architecture.
From April 5 to September 21, the “Costumer l’Histoire” (Costuming History) exhibition will be on show, featuring some one hundred costumes evoking famous artists in their historical roles, such as Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Dominique Blanc and Virna Lisi in Queen Margot, as well as Ingrid Bergman, Sandrine Bonnaire, Lambert Wilson, and many others… In August (8, 9, 15 and 16), from 9 p.m. to midnight, you’ll be able to take part in original evening events, with a fire show created to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of the construction of the keep by the Count of Anjou, Foulques Nerra.
Château Royal de Blois
Residence of seven kings and ten queens of France, the Château Royal de Blois offers a fine synthesis of the architecture and history of the Loire castles, notably through its courtyard, which offers a veritable panorama of French architecture from the Middle Ages to the 17th century.
From April 5 to September 21 at 10 pm or 10:30 pm, enjoy a sound and light show in the courtyard of the château, retracing the great hours of its history. With text by Alain Decaux, Robert Hossein, Pierre Arditi and Fabrice Lucchini recount the loves, dramas and mysteries of the château that have shaped French history.
Abbaye de Fontevraud
One of the largest in Europe, this monastic city is the royal necropolis of the Plantagenets. After 10 centuries of life behind closed doors, the abbey is now a Centre Culturel de Rencontre (label of the French Ministry of Culture and Communication), open to the outside world and to the times.
From April 5 to November 30, the “Animal” exhibition by Grégoire Solotareff will be on show. A few months after the release of the film “Loulou, l’incroyable secret”, Fontevraud Abbey invites visitors to immerse themselves in Solotareff’s bestiary and behind-the-scenes look at the film. On the program: monumental paintings, sculptures, extracts from the film, previously unpublished sketches, washes and models of the town of Wolfenberg, principality of the wolves, and almost 300 preparatory drawings for the film.
To know: From June 2014, the Abbey will become a cultural resort, with the opening of Fontevraud, the hotel and its haute cuisine restaurant.
