Intelligence and fashion are rarely associated. And yet at Wooyoungmi, even if risk-taking wasn’t the order of the day, we were presented with an intelligent collection of wearable, witty garments.
Inspired by photographer Steve McCurry’s most famous photograph, the label’s designers chose to explore the world’s different cultures and ethnicities. This idea is reflected in the garments’ prints, most of which feature ethnic horizontal lines or floral motifs. The tones are very natural, reminiscent of the earth and nature.
The attention to detail is striking, with color matches between collars and garments. For example, I recall an outfit where the striped blazer reveals a shirt also striped with the same motifs as the jacket.
A summer collection wouldn’t be so named if it didn’t feature shorts, light shirts and V-neck spring sweaters, and Wooyoungmi is no exception, in white, shades of blue and beige.
Suits are in pastel shades of lavender and salmon, and outfits are accented with matching clutches. The geometric details are once again very present, without ever distracting attention from the whole, and this is what really makes this collection so intelligent and beautiful. The idea of matching patterns, colors and superimpositions is, for me, a true demonstration of wit and research.
