On Saturday June 22, 2013, two major exhibitions open their doors in France: “Willy Rizzo’s Deauville” on the famous Deauville boards and “Origins of goods” by Jamaican-American artist Nari Ward in the Château de Blandy-les-Tours.

From June 22 to December1, 2013, the Deauville boards will host an original and historic exhibition devoted to one of the first reports by photographer and designer Willy Rizzo, who passed away on February 25. A tribute to the man and the city, since this reportage, shot in 1949 on a 6×6, was the very first to be undertaken after the Second World War. An original print of 35 photos reveals a Deauville freshly recovered from the scars of war, with shots of a town immersed in a festive and prestigious atmosphere, where the stars of the era meet from the Casino to the beach. It’s a very special atmosphere that the 21-year-old photographer captures with a sharp eye that leaves no one indifferent. The latest in a series revealing the town’s photographic memory, Willy Rizzo’s exhibition is free and on view all summer above the cabins lining Deauville’s promenade.

For its part, the Château de Blandy-les-Tours will host the “Origins of goods” exhibition by artist Nari Ward, as part of the 6th Blandy Art Tour(s).

Blandy Art Tour(s), a bold collaboration between the Conseil Général de Seine-et-Marne and the Galleria Continua international contemporary art gallery, is set to surprise us once again this year with the arrival of Jamaican-born New York artist Nari Ward and his giant works. The artist has taken over the premises, presenting a number of sculptures and installations, half of which are new productions, and proposing a reflection on identity and power based on the symbol of the ancient fortress that marked the passage to the royal domain in the Middle Ages. Having himself experienced the passage from one frontier to another, he draws a parallel with his own history, resonating with issues of control, allegiance and protection through works made entirely from abandoned objects and recycled materials. An original work that he defines himself: “my work is a mixture of provocative optimism, futile ambitions and solutions invented using cross-cultural references, regulatory codes, personal memories and chance”. This not-to-be-missed artistic event joins the long list of performances by the artist, winner of the prestigious Rome Prize in 2012, who will have a solo exhibition in Rome at the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in 2013.
