Comics Selection

Today, superheroes are everywhere, thanks in no small part to film adaptations.

If you’re a fan, or just want to get back to basics, here’s a selection of the best comics around, including “Batman – Court of Owls”, published by Urban Comics. This time, the famous superhero is in pursuit of a mysterious owl-like assassin in Gotham. He’s about to discover that this investigation, rich in revelations, is going to turn his life upside down like never before.

The Scott Snyder – Greg Capullo duo succeed in giving Batman one of his most exciting adventures yet. The script cleverly blends action and suspense with the story of Bruce Wayne’s family, with Nightwing as guest star. The artwork is simply superb. We’re already looking forward to the sequel, due in early 2012.

Marvel’s most astonishing comic-book of the moment is undoubtedly “Mystery Men” (100% Marvel). This first volume, with David Liss and Patrick Zircher at the helm, entitled “The Great Depression”, is set in 1932 and features the first superheroes, including a masked detective wearing a borsalino! Original and exciting adventures.

Delcourt is also publishing for the first time the comic-book “Image” by Justin Jordan and Traad Moore, entitled “Luther Strode”. On the program: a young man fed up with being the school’s whipping boy, who discovers a (bloody!) way to change things… Humor, offbeat situations, violence… this comic-book won’t leave you indifferent! (Sensitive souls please).

In parallel, don’t miss two European comics that pay tribute to comic books. First, “Texas Cowboys” (Dupuis), created by the Bonhomme-Trondheim duo, plunges you into the Far West, with a gallery of exceptional characters, including the beautiful Betsy and Sam Bass, a memorable outlaw.

Then there’s the legendary Lucky Luke, whose new album Cavalier Seul (Lucky Comics) is the highlight of the year. For the second time, the Achdé-Pennac-Benacquista trio have succeeded in their gamble: the plates are very convincing and the pitch exciting. This time, the Daltons split up and try their luck separately. The goal: to be the first to win a million dollars and become the new leader of the quartet! Action, humor and, above all, an exciting storyline… A real pleasant surprise that pays superb tribute to Morris, a genius artist with a passion for comics. The only downside is that the colors are less attractive than on the previous album. For the record, the authors have dedicated this comic to all those who have brothers and sisters. Morris and Goscinny had dedicated “Ma Dalton” (published in 1971) to their mothers.

Finally, on the DVD side, the big event is obviously “The Amazing Spider-Man” (Sony Pictures), directed by Marc Webb (the aptly named). Compared with the first film directed by Sam Raimi, this new version of the superhero’s origins respects the original comic-book more closely, thanks in particular to the presence of Gwen Stacy and the web-throwers, even if it also takes some liberties with the comics. In detail, the cast is perfect, the direction spectacular and the tone of the film quite dark. However, the script is a little too linear, but in any case, the element of surprise is no longer present, since the film is a relaunch. All in all, the gamble paid off, and the film will delight all comic book fans. We look forward to the sequel, still directed by Webb, in 2014.
