Yohann Aubé: an epicurean poker player!

On the occasion of the WPT Grand Prix de Paris, which took place in mid-September and was won by American Matt Salsberg, we meet Yohann Aubé, one of the 228 players taking part. A promising boy….

A big smile lights up his face… At 25, wearing casual clothes, Yohann looks like any other young man his age, but he leads a life of his own: he’s a professional poker player.
Yohann discovered poker when he was 17. He was introduced to it by his tennis teacher on the way to and from competitions. Since then, he’s never given up! And he stopped playing poker with friends a long time ago: “Frankly, I don’t have the time”, he admits. At the WPT Paris, with a buy-in of 7,500 euros, he was unfortunately eliminated prematurely by Michael Misraki, “a player even more aggressive than me at the table”, he says, a little disappointed. His stack melted away inexorably.
However, in recent years, he has been racking up a series of “breakthroughs”, notably at the WPT Vienna in 2011, where he finished 13th. For him, tournaments are a showcase and a way of attracting sponsors.
But Yohann’s real playground is online. Like all pro players, he can play between 10 and 20 tables simultaneously. Mainly cash games.
Yohann plays an average of 20 hours a week. “I’m a big slacker”, he says. He regularly frequents the Partypoker.fr tables, where he has the opportunity to win packages for live tournaments. His office hours are 10pm-3am. Yohann also wants to keep the notion of fun alive. He estimates that he has played 600,000 hands. Among his influences and masters, he cites Phil Galfond and above all Basile Yaiche, “who taught me a lot”. Yohann hates showing off and blowing his winnings in nightclubs. He’s more of an epicurean and an aesthete. He loves Michelin-starred restaurants and fine wines, and even dreams of one day setting up his own restaurant.
He doesn’t deny his participation in a reality TV show, “La maison du Bluff”, where he was a coach. He even had a “brilliant experience” there.
There’s no doubt that Yohann Aubé is a player we’ll be hearing a lot more about.
