“God put me on Earth for three reasons: to make entertaining music, happy music videos and to mess things up! “Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga, real name Stefania Gabriella Germanotta, is an American singer and songwriter. Unknown until 3 years ago, she has become an essential artist, creating a truly extravagant persona with a very assertive musical, sartorial and artistic universe. Fascinating to her fans and irritating to her detractors, in 2010 she was voted most influential personality by The Times magazine. She has become an icon who cannot leave anyone indifferent.
To kick off the 2011 Art & Fashion Addiction program at Reflexgallery in Paris, the gallery’s artistic director Frédéric Fontan has decided to host the “GAGA EXPERIENCE” exhibition, which runs until January 17, 2011, and highlights the whimsical, inspiring and creative universe of the essential icon of art and fashion.
An audacious encounter imagined by curator Alexandra Boucherifi, this exceptional exhibition brings together the different universes celebrating the fascinating icon through a hundred pieces collected from all over the world. For Alexandra Boucherifi,“GAGA EXPERIENCE is an opportunity for fans and the public intrigued by the Lady Gaga phenomenon to approach and tame her universe, through dozens of portraits and incredible outfits“.
More than just an exhibition, “GAGA EXPERIENCE” is an original tribute to the Lady Gaga phenomenon.
The“Hall of Fame Monsters” features dozens of works by Lady Gaga’s biggest fans from all over the world, the “little monsters” as the artist likes to call them. Both touching and interesting, this wall, designed rather like a teenager’s bedroom wall, celebrates the muse she represents for so many people. A real nugget for Lady Gaga fans, it also introduces newcomers to the artist’s distinctive world.
Stefan Mucchielli ‘s black-and-white portrait, or American artist Anna Correia‘s very unexpected but oh-so-successful altar, with all its little references to the Gaga character, are true illustrations of the expertise of these fans and provide a better understanding of the star’s universe.
A talented singer and musician, Lady Gaga has become a veritable artistic icon, inspiring the most original fashion designers. The star always highlights the artists she loves in her work, and knows how to wear the wildest creations like no one else. And they do her proud, often creating unique or original pieces inspired by her, such as the created by Yazbukey
depicting a portrait of the artist.
A selection of original drawings of outfits and exceptional pieces worn by Lady Gaga during her shows and music videos are on display on the second floor of the gallery. From the leather bodysuit designed by Jean-Claude Jitrois for her first concert in France, to the Viktor and Rolf designs, the Junko Shimada ballerinas, the Thierry Mugler hat and the famous grey Christian Louboutin boots worn in the Telephone video, a number of fabulous pieces can be admired in the“Lady Gaga’s stage outfits” section, which is accessed after passing a crime scene directly inspired by the video for the song Telephone.
“Lady Gaga vue par des artistes contemporains” gives a more artistic vision of Lady Gaga through more established artists using different media (sculpture, painting, installation…) like the magnificent “digital painting” by Hervé Perdriel, my favorite piece, or the sculpture-mannequin created by Michael Couvreur. We’re delighted to findAmylee ‘s universe in two completely Gagalicious canvases.Angéline Mélin‘s Gaga Doll triptych, inspired by the famous dress-up dolls of our childhood, will make every fan dream of “owning” their own Lady Gaga. Vainui de Castelbajac, inspired by the controversial meat dress, has created a humorous drawing, while illustrator Walter Minus offers us his vision of Lady Gaga.
This exhibition is a real success. Extremely coherent, despite its markedly different universes, you can feel that each piece has been carefully chosen for its artistic impact and for the coherence that emanates from the exhibition. This exhibition does much more than pay tribute to Lady Gaga, it also speaks of the relationship that everyone can have with an icon, from the simple fan to the fashion designer to the artist. A brilliant way of linking art and fashion.
