With Storm Pablo and Marvin Douglas, Moynat transposes the labels of its former trunks onto its monogrammed canvas. A travel souvenir becomes a construction.
The hotel label, once added to a trunk at each stopover, becomes a component made for the bag. Presented on 23 October by LVMH, the Hotel Moynat collection starts from these traces kept in the house’s archives. Stylist Storm Pablo and jewellery designer Marvin Douglas offer a contemporary translation of them.
From pasted trace to sewn piece
The motifs are recreated in leather, then sewn individually onto the “M” Monogram canvas. They appear on Hobo bags, totes, pouches and travel accessories. The project also includes scarves, a new Mignon bag and Limousine trunks.
This change of material is the detail to watch. An old label documented a journey already made; the one on the new bag precedes its owner’s journey. It now belongs to the chosen motif, with a thickness and a stitching that bring it into the making of the object.
Two distinct chapters
The first part is announced as available in boutiques. A second is due in November, with crystal studs inspired by the metal pieces that protected the trunks. This sequel remains an announcement: it should not be confused with the offer already presented.
Hotel Moynat thus poses an interesting question to luggage houses: what is kept of an object meant for transport when it becomes an accessory worn every day? Here, the archive supplies an identifiable detail and a material operation. It is at this precise level that the lineage can be examined, beyond the mere vocabulary of travel.
