Carhartt WIP for the 25th Anniversary of La Haine

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic French film La Haine, Carhartt WIP has created an exclusive capsule collection in collaboration with director and screenwriter Matthieu Kassowitz.

First released in 1995, La Haine tells the story of a 20-hour whirlwind through the lives of three friends – Vinz, Saïd and Hubert – from the suburbs of Paris. Shot entirely in black and white, the film illustrates the tensions between the particularly underprivileged inhabitants of the suburbs and the police, whose presence is a symbol of the political divide, unwilling to confront the problems of these neighborhoods.

A tale of lost youth embracing boredom, Vinz, Saïd and Hubert are determined to live the most important day of their lives, following a night of rioting triggered by the beating of their friend, Abdel Ichah, by a policeman during an interrogation. While Vinz is committed to revenge, Hubert is calmer and more thoughtful, while the lively Saïd completes the trio.

Although Kassowitz’s film is fictional, the story of the protagonists portrayed remains very close to reality. In La Haine, Kassowitz highlights the stark contrast between life in the suburbs and Paris itself.

The capsule collection comprises seven pieces, including a hoodie, T-shirts and a beanie similar to the one worn by Hubert’s character. Three of the T-shirts feature behind-the-scenes shots by photographer Gilles Favier*, whose black-and-white photography contributed to the film’s aesthetic.

In addition, the capsule will include an embroidered Active Jacket, like the one worn on the set of the film by Kassowitz, a long-time friend of the brand. This piece will be exclusively reserved for Carhartt WIP friends and family, as well as members of the film crew.

Carhartt WIP for the 25th anniversary of La Haine is available in selected Carhartt WIP stores and on carhartt-wip.com

*The same year the film was released, Favier and Kassovitz published the book Jusqu’ici Tout Va Bien – a quote from the film.

All profits from this collaboration will be donated to a charity chosen by Carhartt WIP.
